Edit CinemaDNG's In PremiereCC

PostFri Nov 01, 2013 5:29 pm

Nov 1 Update to Premiere Pro CC allows you to directly import CinemaDNG files and edit directly in Premiere without converting to another format or proxies.

Yeah, I'm excited for this!
Now I just to convince my Pocket cam to start handing over DNG's to me...

Updated and tried a quick edit last night, works as advertised! Although performance doesn't seem to as good as redcode raw... yet. :-)

Sorry if I'm missing the obvious but could someone point me to a link or two with CinemaDNG clips I could download for my own test of the latest Premiere CC? Thanks in advance.

I'm stuck shooting a gala event for two days and can't play with the update until Sunday :\

Can you guys tell me what level of control you have over the raw parameters?

I still don't think it's a smart thing to edit DNGs in Premiere. Maybe if it was an extremely short project but still, those file sizes are huge and the performance isn't as good. You could be setting yourself up for a few potential problems with slowdown or whatever other weirdness Premiere might have. I still think it's best to edit ProRes or something like Cineform Raw.

Well, you could edit in PP CC but create and add proxies for speed and then do the final render...

Certainly not features.. but some shorts, and definitely commercials and web spots/series and I bet a lot of music videos. It would help with a simple workflow..

In my opinion, the offline online system would work much better.

I've done several videos for work in Premiere Pro CC but am by no means an expert.

Downloaded Philip Bloom's BMCC raw clips from BMD website. Took the 3 that are 24 fps. (I don't think it would matter if I'd dropped in the 2 clips at 30fps but decided to keep it simple.) Created a sequence at 2400x1350 @ 24fps. Put the 3 clips in the timeline. Got about 12-15 fps (my guess) performance in the Source/Program windows by setting playback to 1/2 or 1/4. (sometimes playback was ok even at "Full", haven't figured that out yet.) Applied 24-frame Film Dissolve between each transition. Playback performance of dissolves in Program window equals playback performance of straight cuts. Scrubbing performance in timeline is excellent. Exported 13 second sequence to H.264 Match Source - High Bit Rate (2400x1350 res) in about 1 min. 32 sec. Resulting file size is 13.4MB. To my eye, quality is stunning in Windows Media player. My dissolves stutter but only because I didn't trim the clips before applying, as they are short to begin with. So frames get duplicated in the dissolve.

PC is Sager i7 Notebook with 12GB RAM and 2 x 7200rpm 500GB internal drives. Windows 7 Pro. So far, this looks quite usable for my purposes (1 to 5 minute videos).

Stability and performance. When you have that much media, stability decreases, even in Avid and that by far is the most stable system for long form. I have a near 2 hour feature that needs to be cut down and Premiere chugs along. It's all ProRes. That's nowhere near the amount of data The CinemaDNGs take up.
