2.4 K Raw

PostSat Nov 02, 2013 3:35 am

Hi guys i am in the process of purchasing 5d mark 3 or black magic camera 2.4k one still debating ND SEARCHING . My question is can my mac handle 2.4 raw editing I use FCP7 AF and Premiere for editing and a bit of resolve for CC for now my mac can handle 1080p with no prob but i was thinking what about 2.4k raw. But i am defiantly leaning to black magic camera.

My spec are

2009 mac pro
12gb ram
quad core 2.66 xeon
GTX 550TI and Radeon 5770 all PC crads
One green HD for main OSX and one 1 TB black HD for video

I was thinking to spend about 3k 5d mark 3 on new cam but if i go with Black magic instead of 5d mark 3 i can save some money and invest in to comp hardware and cam to handle 2.5 k or is it my wishful thinking what would you recommend?

Thanks guys for help

Get the BMCC and shoot in film mode with ProRes 422 HQ. It is a lovely log (flat) codec with excellent dynamic range and easy to grade. It's 1080p (smaller files) and then when you can spring for a better computer, you can start shooting raw. I own a 5D and it's a fine camera, but after shooting with the BMCC, there is no comparison.

Greetings, your Mac Pro specs are alright, there will be no problem with the BMCC 2.5K CinemaDNG files at all. I use a late 2009 iMac and always had shot at 2.5K since I bought my BMCC EF mount, sadly I can't use Resolve because of my Core 2 Duo processor, just for that, but it runs smoothly after processing the CinemaDNG files on After Effects CS6, then on Final Cut Pro 7 or Premiere Pro CS6. For your Mac Pro there won't be any problem, but I suggest you adding more RAM, much as you can.

Here on page 18 of DaVinci Resolve manual you'll see the best configuration to run Resolve.
