URSA 12K & those wicked frame rates

PostSat Sep 11, 2021 6:31 am

Purely out of interest.
The URSA 12K couldn't shoot in 1080p at 480 or higher frames right? Would it have the power to do this, obviously being cropped in?

I know it's been mentioned before, 12k 8k and 4k with regards to resolution.

Sure 1000fps is a different territory, but this question merely comes from being inquisitive.

The whole system has to be designed with the frame rate in mind.

Just because the sensor could do it (say) the computer doing the demoniac or the memory buffer or whatever other process is happening ALSO needs to be large enough to cope.

That's a fundamental design choice that's almost the first thing that gets locked in. Think of it as a system speed, not frame rate.

That makes sense.

Tim B mentioned on these forums some time ago that here rarely if ever uses those higher avalaible frame rates.

I've found the same. If you're after really decent looking slo motion you'd be looking at a different camera all together.

Thanks for taking the time JB

How is that? The 12K (and other cameras by BM) are perfectly fine for the occasional slo-mo as they are used in commercials, weddings or conventional storytelling.
OK, if you need extreme slo-mo, like in technical demos or for VFX, you'd go and hire a Phantom instead.

Travis,
Huh? I think it's called Super 16 mode. 240fps in 4K and it works fine... can then down size to 1080p240.

Time lapse works great with the 12K. Also I have been able to get 24p 1 frame every three (that's 8 frames per second) at 12K Q0... and using just one card (Angelbird AV PRO CF)... nice.

Yeah I meant, people want slo mo. The slow mo they want though tends to be around the 1000fps. Which is a different camera all together.
What the U12k does is incredible already. My OP was just asking if it's possible to shoot in 1080 at those higher frames :D

If what you're shooting is moving slowly you could slow down artificially from 240fps to 480fps or even higher with a special effect / a particular software. But I guess if you want to shoot something at 1000fps it's because there is really something interesting to see at 1000 fps that you don't see at 200 fps, correct ?

Yeah I guess the idea is that at 1k+ FPS you're starting to create some mesmerising imagery.

Why not, if done right? Look at the slo-mo scenes in Lars von Trier's "Melancholia".
