glow/light effect in The Cranes Are Flying (1957)

PostSat Sep 11, 2021 9:49 pm

I wonder what filter or silk had been used by Sergey Urusevskiy (camera) and Mikhail Kalatozov (director) in the making of The Cranes Are Flying. Note the vertical light effect in her eyes.

Besides this look, there is also remarkeable camera work, but that's another topic.

I second the notion of remarkable camerawork. He also was the cinematographer of "Soy Cuba" (I am Cuba).
But I don't recognize the type of filter.
Since it's passing over her eyelids, it can't be a reflected light source, as we often use for a highlight in the eyes.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

yes it's passing over her eyelids, well observed. I made a crop of the image to make it more visible in the forum format.

Just beautiful. The eyes as well, not only the effect.

Probably a catchlight harness. It’s clearer in this shot:

Andrew Lesnie used Christmas lights for a similar catchlight effect for Galadriel’s eyes in Fellowship:

Wally Pfister did good catchlights as well, although his were just regular circular reflections. Quite a shame that catchlight techniques have fallen by the wayside of late. It’s an overlooked creative aspect – brings out the character of eyes so much.

thank you very much gentlemen for the examples and additional information. It certainly is a vast topic.

As Uli has pointed out

there is an additional effect that creates a vertical light stream from the eye's catchlight. That's why my first thought was that there must be a filter or cloth in front of the lens, or behind the lens.

Could well be a kind of string or such.

oh yes, a single string. That could be the trick behind that effect. Thank you Uli.
