NAB 2021 - BMD Wish List

As much as I am looking forward to buying a Ursa Mini 12K, I'd love to think that Blackmagic will announce SOMETHING new this year at NAB.

My Predictions:

- A new camera with the new sensor (possibly a new body design!)
- Some sort of Accessory product, maybe a new EVF or some audio-sync related thing (that's just not as sexy but definitely practical)
- Next Gen Video Assist, to compliment the 12K

New camera with continuous autofocus, IBIS and internal ND filters. Capable of creating cinematic images just like the original BMPCC. And if it's got a global shutter I won't complain.

Since the BMD URSA EVF is no longer available from large online, your prediction of a new EVF may come true. An EVF that is low cost and universal for use on any BMD cameras.

What’s everyone’s deal with IBIS. More dynamic range and dual gain sensor would be neat, perhaps a new ssd recorder. RF Mount would be great.

It is either IBIS or EFFECTIVE COOLING. Pick your poison.
You can't move the sensor like it would be necessary for IBIS if it has a heavy cooling unit attached.

Yeah, Blackmagic will announce any updates on their own schedule anyways.

I’m looking forward to the DaVinci Resolve 18 announcement that is probably imminent within the next few months.

As for camera features and such my views are all over the Forums. I’ve said my desires.

A new firmware for BMPCC 4k with lenses and adapters compatibility and gyro information for post stabilization it's more than enough for me.

Save your wishes until 2022. NAB 2021 has been cancelled after BMD dropped out!

“While we are disappointed that we will not be together again in person next month, we look forward to converging at the 2022 NAB Show, April 23-27, 2022, to reignite our passion for our business and focus on a bright future ahead.”

Cinegear in Los Angeles is still on for this month. There's lots to see there. BMD usually has a booth there too.

The benefit of Cinegear is that it's outdoors....but I'm still skipping it. The risk/benefit ratio isn't particularly appealing to me.

I think perhaps it's time to rethink the entire concept of these conventions. Personally I'm quite satisfied with Grant's streaming presentations...I just wish they were more frequent!

Kays, not being tied to presenting 38 new or updated products in a day in April at NAB, we do have some updates scattered throughout the year. That’s a good thing, but I miss the impact of their big splash at NAB and the teasing of the lead-up, such as the intro to the BMPCC4K. The sense of adventure is gone without those live conventions but it seems BMD is still able to reward us with innovation nonetheless. I’m sure the companies share our disappointment too, but to their credit, deliver new products or updates we appreciate.

Was Blackmagic announcing new products @ NAB?

Will they wait until next NAB April 2022?

I would not be surprise if NAB 2022 will also be cancelled. Covid cases and deaths is rising in America there is no end in sight despite the vaccines. It need to be held outside of USA in lower risk countries.

That's probably just about collaboration with other companies, like Salty Surf Housings: https://twitter.com/Blackmagic_News/status/1436102094222618638/photo/1. It's new in the BMD gallery.

Well, traditionally BMD does a new Resolve release at NAB, Resolve 18 was technically due this past Spring...so there's that.

Typically they will also do hardware announcements as well, it's a good way for them to get a lot of press and since they traditionally have one of the largest spots right at the entrance of NAB, but massive banners all around the convention center, it somehow makes it almost seem as if the NAB show is really the Blackmagic Show (National Association of Blackmagic?)

Since these various vendors’ cancellations came in response to surging COVID-19 cases quite late in the vendors’ preparations for NAB 2021, it might be that we do see a variety of announcements from BMD in October such as the release of DaVinci Resolve 18. Or they may take advantage of the delay until NAB 2022 to announce significant new hardware products that are shipping at that time. That would be the silver lining to the current dark cloud I suppose.

I don't know anything more than you do, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

From a hardware standpoint, I'm not sure what Blackmagic's roster is missing at the moment. They have a high-end but quite affordable 12K pro camera, a series of Pocket 6K and 4K cameras that cover pretty much all the needs, and a broadcast oriented series for studio usage.

People keep wanting a cube-shaped form factor and others ask for a full frame sensor, but quite honestly I just don't see the market for those things to be something that Blackmagic is overly concerned with. As much as RED seems to be a competitor, they really aren't. Blackmagic is a larger company with a much wider user base and product range.

After shooting some extensive UMPG2 2K Window 240 FPS for a Show Jumping Horse event I must say that I would love to see Super 16mm 6K on the URSA Mini Pro 12K eventually hit 240 FPS and the 4K Super 16mm achieve higher. This is definitely based on the 12K full sensor and full resolution eventually hitting 120 FPS.

Eventually there is a limit to how much FPS you really need. Something like this the 240 FPS was clutch for amazing slow motion of the horses performing the jumps. It’s a fast action sport. Would 1,000 FPS be amazing? Yes. But at what cost?

1,000 FPS works best in bursts for certain fast action. But it really is a specialty type of camera. So considering that 6K is perfectly half the 12K for going from S35 to S16 I’d say 240 FPS is really all I’d ask for oversampling for 4K output.

Kays, BMD is missing the BMPCC8K with mFT mount and a crop of the RGBWWW sensor. Was it John Brawley who suggested, just use the entire 12K RGBWWW sensor with a mFT mount?

I say screw it....let's go for a Super-8mm sensor!

Actually...who am I fooling, by the end of the year we'll all be shooting on our iPhones' 1/2.55" sensors!
