Are there any differences between Samsung T5s?

PostThu Sep 23, 2021 4:12 am

I was scrolling through the BM PCC4K recommended list of SDD and noticed that for the different codecs/framerates/resolutions BM are recommending different capacity Samsung T5 drives - i.e.

The following USB-C drives are recommended for recording 4K DCI Blackmagic RAW 3:1 up to 60 fps.
Samsung Portable SSD T5 1 TB

The following USB-C drives are recommended for recording 4K DCI ProRes HQ up to 60 fps.
Samsung Portable SSD T5 500 GB
Samsung Portable SSD T5 1 TB
but NOT the Samsung Portable SSD T5 2TB

Is it really that 2 TB version is not suitable for 4K DCI ProRes HQ up to 60 fps and that 1 TB version is not suitable for 4K DCI Blackmagic RAW 3:1 up to 60 fps?
I'm going to purchase some T5s and I was looking at buying 4 x 1 TB drives as to me these provide the best capacity-to-reliability ratio - i.e. I'd prefer 2 x 1 TB drives over single 2 TB drive as if one of the 1 TB drives fails I will still have the other one operational until a new 1 TB drive is purchased while if the 2 TB drive fails it will be a much bigger problem.

It's weird that different capacities max out at different speeds.

I've heard good things about the CFast to SSD adapters, namely when shooting at maxed out res / speed. I love the T5 drives but if they drop frames then they're kind of useless.

Each model as noted has a different on-board controller and cache and such. Those are very important when pushing a drive to max *sustained* thruput.

I found the 500 GB T5 to work perfectly until I put it to recording bright sunlight BRAW at high quality in UHD. After a couple minutes of shooting I got a frame drop and the camera stopped recording.

I looked at those charts, and got the Wise 1TB SSD. Love it.

It is smaller and easier to put anywhere on the cage with the nifty included mount. And it doesn't overload in max data usage.

Marvelous tool.
