Video Assist 12G HDR firmware 3.5

PostFri Oct 08, 2021 3:55 am

AT LAST :D
The screen calibration are exactly like the Pocket cameras.
No more warm and magenta cast. Only regret that it took so long for it to happen I amost returned/sold the damn thing. It is now the best camera monitor I have.

Having calibration is very nice so I can match the BMPCC4K screen with the BMVA12G7 monitor. But also appreciate the extra controls for HDR.

I was just installing this. On the calibration, do you use a calibrator, or just adjust it by eye? I played with it for just a few minutes uncontested and guess I didn't quite understand it yet.

I adjust the white and grey areas of the test pattern and then confirm by eye shooting an 18% grey card or a white sheet of paper.

Here's a Resolve .drt to load an image of the calibration targets so you can display on a calibrated reference display (or other monitor) to view while matching

The VA 12G 5" HDR according to JB uses the same screen as the Pocket 6k Pro. I have the VA 12G 7" HDR and when comparing to the Pocket 6k Pro the VA expose more of the shadow. The VA 12G is rated at 2500 nits while the Pocket 6k Pro at 1500 nits so maybe same screen different engine?

An excellent 4 minute primer on how to calibrate the 6K Pro LCD, should be nearly identical to the process used to calibrate the Video Assist.

Now that BMD has finally released a fix for screen calibration I can compare my VA 12G with my Atomos Flame screen. When it comes to accurately displaying what I'm seeing in real life the Atomos is the clear winner. Things like hue, WB, saturation and contrast the Atmos Flame hands down better. However when comparing to what is shown on the screens of the VA and Atomos to what is been recorded the VA 12G is much more accurate while the Atomos Flame is way off. Now this could be the monitor I'm using on my Mac maybe closer match to the VA but I don't agree this is the case. The Atomos screen is showing better "graded" image than what is being recorded would be my assesment. I don't know how others prefer, do you want to use an external monitor to look exactly like what is being recorded by your camera or do you prefer to have your extenal monitor to look closer to what you are seeing in real life but bear little resemblance to what is being recorded?

I want my displays to show me what the camera is recording. Otherwise how can you judge exposure?

I've been using the Ninja V to record Prores RAW for the past year, and using the gorgeous display, false color and the waveform monitor, I've never encountered a problem getting precise exposure each and every time.
