Camera 7.5 Update ruins RAW Performance

PostFri Nov 12, 2021 7:49 am

I installed Cameras v7.5 to get the newer Blackmagic RAW Player, Blackmagic RAW Speed Test, Blackmagic RAW SDK and Blackmagic RAW plugins.
The new RAW versions perform a lot less RAW fps for my CPU (5950X).
Uninstalling version 7.5 and reinstalling version 7.4.1 does not return my system to the performance before v7.5.

How do I make a clean uninstall of all RAW components in order to get back the better performance of version 7.4.1?

On the BMD Support page you can scroll down to find the separate install notice for raw 2.2. The first step should be to erase the current version on your computer before you install the latest version. (Not sure if this is what you’re after though.)

I uninstalled using the "Microsoft Install_and_Uninstall Troubleshooter".
Went back to RAW version 2.1.
Still the same bad performance.

I’m Mac but I hope PC can help confirm you are removing BRAW 2.2 correctly before you reinstall.

On a Mac when you open the .dmg file there is an uninstall app that should be used to remove all traces of the RAW software before you use the install app to load the latest RAW version. There is nothing on the Mac called Troubleshoot.

There's a program called AppCleaner on the Mac, maybe something like that exists on PC too?

Uli, have my doubts that’s the solution. Those kind of third-party utilities are often carrying a virus and may require a hard disk erase and rebuild to remove. The problem here I’m assuming is just cleaning up some failing software components causing a conflict. I am sorry I no longer am familiar with Windows etc to know what will clean up the errant pieces of BMD RAW if rebooting and a proper delete/restore doesn’t help.

Do you think the procedure the OP described is appropriate on a PC?

While I’m always careful about apps I run on my machine, AppCleaner has been around for years and does a good job.
The process the TO used should normally help under Windows.

2.2 only added support for some new (3rd party) cameras, there weren't any changes that would affect performance. If you saw a difference going from 2.1 to 2.2 then likely something else in your system changed. If going back to an older version doesn't change it either then that seems like more evidence its something else. Maybe an OS update, or GPU driver update? GPU driver changes are notorious for affecting/breaking things.

I really hope that the jump from Win 10 Pro 20H2 to Win 10 Pro 21H1 is not causing the issue.

I updated to Windows 10 version 21H2, build 19044.1387. CPU performance shown in the RAW Speed Test did not improve.
Only some additional BIOS optimizations did some good, but did not get the CPU performance back to the level from about two month ago.
GPU is OK.
