URSA Broadcast G2 update

PostFri Nov 12, 2021 3:16 pm

I have just watched the video.
Grant Petty is having too much fun blowing my mind. :ugeek:

My lizard Outside Broadcast brain is now on fire and smoke is coming out my ears. :o

Well done Blackmagic, you never stop to amaze me.

Yes, it is a good improvement for the Broadcast line of cameras. I am very impressed. Not necessarily for me as I do not do a lot of broadcast. But, for some purposes I'd love to work on it if a company was providing the gear. Overall I love Blackmagic's tools and their UI. I'm digging some of the OS updates.

What blew my socks off is that you can link the camera to an Atem Streaming Bridge and control the camera via a switcher anywhere in the world, through a smart phone.

But it's a 6K cinema camera too! Just use a PL-mount lens or EF (or Nikon-mount).

I hope they consider giving it a firmware update to give it all the cinema features that are on the pocket 6k cameras. If they don’t it will be the first time they’ve actually crippled hardware for a specific market segment. Notably absent are the cinema 4K shooting modes, and 2.8k slow mo. Also figuring exposure using gain value is a bummer if not what you’re used to.

This could be a great all around camera for shooters who mostly do corporate and event stuff, some broadcast, as well as narrative sometimes when projects come together. An Ursa pro body to perfectly pair with pocket 6k would be ideal

I would suggest separate menu tabs for broadcast and cinema working conditions. I don’t think doing that would cut into other ursa cam market. 4.6k still has dynamic range advantage, 12k does it’s thing. 6k is dual native iso run and gun, probably biggest market share anyway, why not maximize it.

URSA Broadcast G2 update

PostFri Nov 12, 2021 5:49 pm

I’m in the camp of those who are very impressed with the G2 changes; having your phone plug-in to the camera USB-C connector to interface the camera to the World Wide Web is pretty nice.

It would appear that a future firmware update for the Broadcast G2 could make it smarter and more capable. For example, why claim it’s also a cinema camera if the firmware doesn’t include 4K 16:9 and 4K 2.4:1 and especially 4K DCI? And include 2.8K for economical 2K 444 deliverables, if it’s not there.

6 dB = 1 full ISO exposure step (e.g. from 200 to 400)

From the tech specs:

ProRes Shooting Resolutions and Frame Rates
1920 x 1080 (HD) up to 120 fps - scaled from 2.7K windowed sensor

Interestingly not in BRAW, but:
Blackmagic RAW Shooting Resolutions and Frame Rates
1920 x 1080 (HD) up to 150 fps

Also nice from the manual:

Focus Zoom
This can be configured to show on the LCD or the front or main SDI to outputs

Playback Menu
The LCD touchscreen displays a timeline of segments representing all the recorded clips.
Each segment in the timeline represents an individual clip. The current clip name and number
is shown at the top left of the display and the total number of clips on the card or drive is shown
in brackets.
The counter ahead of the timeline displays the current location of the playhead and the counter
after the timeline displays the total duration of all the clips.

If Card Drops Frame
When set to ‘alert’ the dropped frame indicator will be displayed on the LCD
touchscreen, and recording will continue with dropped frames

Focus Assist Level
To set the level of focus assistance for your LCD touchscreen, front SDI or main SDI, move the
slider from left to right.

Note from me: Can be set between 0 and 100
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

It is an interesting camera. Does it have one or two USB ports? I wish it came with 32 bit float audio. If they can do it in a tentacle sync you would think they could do it in an Ursa body.

I'd love to purchase since it has Pro Res, but I have 3 G2s and they won't match since the G2 color science hasn't been updated. I don't edit in Resolve... Great new features though...

On B&H specs page for the Ursa Broadcast G2 they say it's global shutter but I'm not sure if it's correct

We haven’t heard if the rolling shutter readout times have been improved for the Broadcast G2. Perhaps CaptainHook will be able to share that information with us, including the 6K readout when not using the B4 mount.

Grant would have mentioned GS. That's not a gloss over feature that is added in the foot note.
Suspect this is the same sensor or close to the one on the pocket 6K. Based off of the sensors max frame rates, dims, sensitivity and resolution. The 4.6K G2 has higher frame rates, so the electronics should be able to take the HFR, but the match the P6K.... which isn't a global shutter sensor.

Re: URSA Broadcast G2 update

I don't know if I understood correctly (English is not my main language) but Grant Petty said in the begining of the presentation (around 2min20s) that "they (blackmagic) orderer new sensors for the URSA Broadcast but they still didn't received them. And they decided to work hard to put a new model out (without this "new sensor" then ?)

Because to me, as I stated in another post, it's a Pocket 6K in an URSA Body with some incredible broadcast feed integrated...

You can litteraly hook up an iphone to the URSA and have a live view on the internet or an iPad if I follow correctly... truly amaizing. That's what Timbut2 whas hopping for I think

What makes me think it's the 6K sensor is that the "downloadable" files from the URSA Broadcast G2 homepage on Blackmagicdesign website are from cinematographer/youtuber Matteo Bertoli who I think shot those images on a pocket 6K....

https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=150440

With that said, does it mean that a URSA G3 with a new sensor is around the corner ?

No, I think what he meant was that they were backordered on sensors for the previous Ursa Broadcast for two years so they decided to take the opportunity to build a new Ursa Broadcast with a "new" sensor. It would make sense that it's using the same sensor as the Pocket 6K since they'd already be buying those for the Pocket 6K. He didn't say so specifically but just said it was a new sensor, meaning new to the Ursa Broadcast.

This is definitely something I was hoping for at one point I bet. I've lost track of all my ideas and crazy notions. They come out of me like crazy, and I just love to share. I know one of my ideas was connecting the iPhone or iPad to the camera via USB to do firmware updates on the camera, and to load LUTs and such. I think also for using an iPad to control some BRAW settings... I don't remember perfectly. Again a lot of ideas swimming in this head.

But this feature does interest me. It's definitely more for Live Streaming, and that is incredibly awesome. Might make it a perfect camera for using with a Teleprompter and Zoom Calls for a Broadcast. Connect the phone and if the teleprompter is also connected you have the Zoom Meeting displayed on the Teleprompter while broadcasting to Zoom. Makes for on-camera interviews across states, countries, and continents all the more interesting.

I think the Ursa broadcast G2 is a good Cinema camera and excellent ENG camera, but I think the rolling shutter if it's the same as bmpcc 6k it's a problem let's hope in 4k crop with b4 lens mode it's faster then regular 6k

I wonder if the TC of the stream will be the same as local recording, then we can record the stream on a growing file, edit while recording in the field, and later relink to the original camera files when they arrive later.

That would be awesome ?

any one knows when this broadcast G2 camera will be shipped from retail store (e.g. bhphoto)? i called bhphoto but they don't have ETA. I called Blackmagic support and they believe their distributors already start to ship to retail channels.

I check other official retail resellers but none of them has any ETA.

I hope the availability is not impacted by the global chip shortage.

thanks

In 4K crop mode, the rolling shutter readout times will be faster than full frame 6K. Anytime you crop, the image area in a sensor, the faster it can read the smaller area. Hope this helps.

i pre-ordered broadcast g2 from bhphotovideo and they shipped out on dec 8.
I start to familiarize myself with it for a week and I like it. I compare it to my BMPCC4K and Lumix GH5 and use Irix cine lens EF mount.

I still can't find much of any sample footage from youtube. I watched Ryan Somerfield's review twice and found it useful.

My client recenly purchased and received 3 BM URSA Broadcast G2 cameras for their first live show since COVID, I convinced them to purchase the BM Focus and Zoom demands. The zoom demand worked great. The focus demand did not work at all. I tried connecting the USB cable in every conceivable way, direct, looped through the Zoom Demand, nothing worked. I have not been able to find any info online about what might be the problem. Has anyone here had any success with the BM Focus Demand with the Fujinon B4 Lens purchased with the camera? BM says it should work, but there are no instructions or troubleshooting tips in the camera manual and the focus demand itself came with no instructions.

The other issue we had was trying to jam sync timecode from one camera to the other two cameras. Regardless of how the reference source was set, either internal or external, they would not sync up.

As I said on another thread - make sure the B4 lenses actually have focus servo - for example in the case of Canon an IRSE lens would not, but T or A in the place of R would indicate the presence of a motor to control focus. Have you tried Tentacle devices to jam TC sync too?

I won't have my first G2 for a couple days so can't test but this may be helpful. I read in another thread that with the Fujinon LA16 lens, the macro ring has to be pushed in the forward position for servo focus to work. I'm not sure why this is, but if you're using that lens, it's worth a try.
