Pocket 6k Pro with Canon 100-400m Lens

Hi,

I recently picked up a used Canon 100-400mm lens to pair with the 6k Pro for filming some dance shows. I don’t really want to rig the camera out with rails and lens support so I’ve just been using the included tripod collar and mounting the lens to the tripod, letting the camera and battery grip hang off it like a DSLR (picture attached).

Am I correct in thinking that this will put less stress on the camera mount than the mounting the camera to the tripod? The reason I wanted to check is that the 6k Pro with battery grip weighs more than a large DSLR with battery grip so I wanted to make sure it’s alright hanging off the back like that.

Any feedback greatly appreciated.

I would suggest a long quick release plate that both the camera and the lens are attached to. You may have to make a wooden spacer for one so the both are flat on the plate. I mount my 100-400 on the pocket 4K with an EF-MFT adapter that way (with all three attached to the plate.) The quick release I use is a Kessler.

Keep in mind that the lens mount screws are in plastic on that camera. But I would attach the same even if a metal body.

Thanks for the suggestion Jeffery and apologies for the late reply. It sounds like a great idea, although I wouldn’t really know to make a spacer and I’d be worried getting it wrong causing even more damage. I’m definitely no good when it comes to making stuff

After giving it some thought I think I’ll end up going down the route of a cage from SmallRig with rods and lens support. They make one that lets you take the battery grip on and off without taking of the cage, which is nice.

Can’t afford the cage until at least January so I’ll probably have to use it as is on a couple of jobs and hope for the best. I think I'll use the lens collar as the camera & battery grip isn’t that much heavier than something like the 1DX.
