Keep in mind that the lens mount screws are in plastic on that camera. But I would attach the same even if a metal body.
Thanks for the suggestion Jeffery and apologies for the late reply. It sounds like a great idea, although I wouldn’t really know to make a spacer and I’d be worried getting it wrong causing even more damage. I’m definitely no good when it comes to making stuff
After giving it some thought I think I’ll end up going down the route of a cage from SmallRig with rods and lens support. They make one that lets you take the battery grip on and off without taking of the cage, which is nice.
Can’t afford the cage until at least January so I’ll probably have to use it as is on a couple of jobs and hope for the best. I think I'll use the lens collar as the camera & battery grip isn’t that much heavier than something like the 1DX.
