Why does BM Camera Utility require a restart?

PostTue Nov 12, 2013 10:48 pm

You can install huge applications that perform a wide variety of impressive functions without a restart.
But the camera utility that just sends an update to a camera requires that I quit all my apps and restart my Mac? Why?

Probably because it installs serviced that allow for UltraScopes over Thunderbolt. These would need to be running at system level.

Yes adamroberts is correct. The component that requires UltraScope and captures over Thunderbolt requires a restart. While the Pocket Cinema Camera does not use these features, it is still part of the install package.

I don't mind a restart. But it was extremely annoying that I had to uninstall the old version before it would let me install the new version, which required a restart. Then installing the new version required a second restart. Most programs don't force you to uninstall the older version to upgrade, let alone force you to restart twice.

Oh and BTW the installer gave me a BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH. Something I have only seen happen on Windows 7 once before...

But whatever. I'm happy to have Raw.

Just don't restart after uninstalling, and don't restart after installing... it gives you the option... and it work's just fine.

It also "trashes" your FCP7 preferences, which is annoying.
