Ursa Mini Pro 12K high current and overheating since 7.7

PostSun Jan 09, 2022 1:08 pm

Hi There.

Since the 7.7 camera update my Ursa Mini Pro 12K is:

Draining a 98Wh battery in less that 10 minutes
Overheating to the point of shutdown within 15 minutes

Before 7.7 I would say that it was prone to getting hot. Previously I'd reckon on 30mins with a 98Wh battery. The camera is used in a studio that is around 19C. It is used on a Manfrotto head that has a reasonably large plate - but this does not block airflow.

I had a quick look around the forum and this does not seem to be a common issue. I can just hear the fan running, so I believe is has not stalled.

Regards

First you can try to downgrade by a simple procedure :
- on computer remove (uninstall) actual camera tool software
- install older version of camera tool software
- connect camera and turn on, software see the camera and propose to update (downgrade) the camera.

I’m a bit curious to know about the power consuming of 12k, I had ump g1 and use since 40-45w/h, the tech spec tell that 12k should use 50w/h, a 98w should be enough for an hour also if you have tons of accessory connected.

Are you sure that your 12k is ok?

That shouldn’t even be possible. Draining a 98wh battery in 10 minutes would require a draw of 588 watts at ~50a continuous output. There are no V-mounts that supply this current. I’d exercise caution moving forward. If the batteries are discharging that quickly there may safety concerns.

What happens on AC?

Good Luck

I think there's either a short somewhere or the battery is old/toasted or not able to sustain high draw in a graceful way...which brand/model is the battery?

Stop using the battery. Try another battery. Also try a/c only without battery attached. If it still does it on another battery, it could be the battery mount wiring connector or camera. If it does it on a/c, definitely camera.

That isn’t firmware.

It’s something bad, probably in the battery or perhaps a short in the battery hardware the v mount or gold mount plate.

This can be super super dangerous. Draining that type of battery so fast can be incendiary and they are very difficult fires to put out.

Second that. Unmount the battery plate and try with mains power.
But be ready to pull the plug quickly if there's any smell!

My sense is that something is not right with the processor if the heat is concentrated on the right upper side of the camera case. If the camera case is hotter at the front right lower to middle side, then the sensor and its attached PCB may be overheating.

These are not good states for the camera to be in. Something will die sooner rather than later. The camera and battery may be running a book on which fails first.

A remote possibility may be the wires from the rear battery plate to the molex plug having become trapped between the case and the plate where there is a sharp corner. The insulation may become squashed and conductive with resistance as the insulation fails.

This could account for a high draw on the battery but not for overheating of the camera itself.

I think a visit by the camera to an approved BM repairer or to BM itself may be in order.

Here’s what I noticed after the update:

I’m going through batteries faster

My cfast card is incredibly hot coming out of the camera

I don’t think this is a coincidence. So far, my cameras working fine, but I did notice these things that seem similar to what you are seeing.

The camera WILL use a little bit more power after the update but only around 6 watts.

Andy are you using any type of rig that blocks the vents on the top of the camera?

My battery is running down a bit faster, but there is no overheating on my 12k. WISE Cards are as hot as before, especially during dual writing.

I've been using 7.7 on UMP 12K and haven't noticed any difference in heat. It seems the same temp as always.

Here's the root cause:

Essentially the fan has failed. Here's the outside temperature (61+ Deg C):

IMG_5902.jpg (390.84 KiB) Viewed 2114 times

And here's the current draw on a bench supply (3A, hence 36W):

Double thanks for all the replies. Co-incidence is a thing!

Makes sense !!

Active (thermoelectric) cooling pulls more and more power the hotter it gets independent of the fan..

Your fan has failed?

You should be able to get one from BMD.

Keep in mind the OP likely had a failing battery coupled with a failed fan. He reported 30 minutes (pre-update) with a 98wh battery when it should be closer to 2.5 hours.

Good Luck
