Image stabilzation

PostThu Jan 13, 2022 5:57 pm

jHI there,

I just bought my bmpcc4k. If I have image stabilization turned on with a manual prime lens that does not have image stabilization. Will it cause some jerkiness in my video?

Thanks,

a blackmagic cinema camera has no internal stabilization
you can only use lenses with

and the switch in the menu is only for some MFT pana/oly lenses without switch on the lens.

I have a few lenses with IS and they are amazing for photos. I can snag shots hand held that I would not have even attempted in the past. Video is a different story. I often get gitter. It's like the lens locks on an image and a few frames pass by before it lets go. Really bad when trying to use something like a slider. Now all lenses might not be equal per IS but that's my experience anyway. Having said that, I have a couple of fixed lens camcorders that have almost like a gimble approach and they work well.

In my experience, only the latest models by Sony and Canon are doing a good job for video too, and only if the stabiliser in the lens and the IBIS work together. For BM's cameras you should look at mechanical means of keeping your shots steady and cure the rest in post (as far as possible).
Maybe AI can help you. Or make you obsolete.

I have some mft len's with my panasonic gh5s. When not using image stabilization your supposed to turn it off in camera. I shot some footage with my bmpcc4k they other day and it had some jerkiness to it and wondered if that was the problem. I had turned it on using my panny 12-35 and when I put the voightlander back on I didn't turn it off. Thought that might be why the footage looked the way it did.

Thanks for response's

The success of the lens based stabilising is entirely based on the lens maker and nothing to do with BMD. They only provide the sensor and the power. And it USED to be that it was only activated once you were recording to save power. I think they changed that with the menu option though.

Lens IS can be OK sometimes, but mostly it's got a very obvious visual signature that isn't very elegant, It tends to grab when you don't want it to and not stop when you need it to.

Certainly not good for drama.

Some lenses have a switch that allows you to disable stabalization in the panning direction while keeping it on for up down movement. That can help. Other than that I agree that you are better off stabalizing the entire camera.
