Ursa 12k and Atlas Anamorphic - Sensor Usage

PostTue Jan 25, 2022 6:21 am

Hi! I’m considering the 12k with a few Atlas anamorphic lenses for a few projects and was wondering about mount choices. Is there a difference in the way the sensor is used that would lead one to choose an EF mount over PL? Quality of the mount aside, would the changeable mount on both the camera and these lenses have implications for sensor usage? Or would a 40mm using PL or EF cover the same sensor area?

Hope I’m making sense.

Thanks

I have the 12K and have used with both the PL and EF mounts. Even though I do not have a lens of given focal length with both mounts the full sensor looks to give the same crop factor with all my PL and EF lenses (which also cover at least full frame.) PL is a much better mount and is what I prefer and have in most of my lenses. However my Canon 100-400mm and Zeiss Otus 28mm have EF mounts and cannot have PL. I also have some MFT mount lenses and wish BMD would offer a MFT mount for the 12K to be used with the 6K super16 sensor crop. Although saying that, it would be better still if BMD made a short flange locking camera mount that could then accept adapters to other mounts. This would provide a much quicker and safer method to change lenses of various mounts.

Hi.

I did a film using the Atlas Anamorphic lenses with the 12k. It’s called Taurus. It’s about to have its first screening at the Berlin film festival.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14921570/

The sensor isn’t optimised for anamorphic.

All the Atlas lenses will cover the sensor no problem and the lens mount itself doesn’t change that performance.

All anamorphic lenses are kind of cropped because the height of the 12k sensor isn’t the same as a “full height” sensor.

This means in anamophic mode the camera becomes 8k and if you had it next to an Alexa that does have a full height sensor (not all Alexa’s do either) the full height sensor will have a wider field of view.

It’s not a huge difference. One other advantage of the Orions is that they also make one of the widest anamorphic lenses made, the 25mm T2. They only just started shipping this lenses so it might not be in every kit you find out there.

They’re great lenses, I was really impressed by them. I would go PL mount if you had a choice. Much better for using with remote motors.
