Hello I have a feature request:

Hoping for more functionality with the Anamorphic De-squeeze options.

I hope that any shooting resolution, we could have option to choose which anamorphic de-squeeze to monitor with (2X, 1.5X, 1.33X etc).

Also: Option to toggle 2X Anamorphic De-squeeze on or off in 4:3 mode (it is automatically turned on in that resolution and no option to turn it off).

I agree with your suggestion that it would be better for the anamorphic settings to be user-selectable. We do have support for quite a lot of recording resolutions and aspect ratios, but not user control of desqueeze options. In most cases the defaults are likely suitable, but some people may still have their own good reasons for selecting a different desqueeze for a frame.

Nothing stops you from recording with a mismatched anamorphic lens and sorting it out in post, but your monitor image will take some adjustment to be comfortable shooting that way.

It’s certainly easier to judge your shot if the camera/monitor is showing the correct desqueeze that corresponds to the lens or adapter that’s squeezing the image. But the 1.8x squeeze is close to 2x desqueeze if the camera gives you that option. So I don’t think that’s much of a challenge. However if you have 1.8x squeezed images and the camera’s/monitor’s anamorphic desqueeze is Off, it is very difficult to judge the frame carefully. You could do it but it is risky that something you think is in frame may not be there in post after the desqueeze.

The horizontal X-axis is squeezed in the camera’s recorded frame, but I get to the proper aspect ratio in post by applying the complementary Edit / Transform / Zoom to the Y-axis only. That gives me complete control in deciding if a recorded circle looks like the real circle. It’s never what I’d call exact however.

So a 2x anamorphic squeeze of the X-axis in camera is corrected in post by a 0.5x Zoom of the Y-axis. A 1.33x squeeze in camera is corrected in post by a 0.75189x zoom of the Y-axis.

A 1.8x squeeze in camera corresponds to a 0.55556x zoom in post. Not exactly but close enough.

Perhaps someone knows the facts in the design of all anamorphic lenses, but I suspect the actual lens squeeze may be affected by the distance of the subjects to the camera with the exact squeeze only applying to subjects at infinity. I know SLR Magic is upfront about this for their Anamorphot that has a smaller squeeze for Near subjects versus Normal distanced subjects b

But even that difference is absolutly abysmal to work with, in my opinion.

If we were 10 or 20 years ago – yes I would understand that I'd have to live with that compromise. But with todays technology and so many 200$ china monitors having a completely user controllable de-squeeze option, I don't even want to talk about compromises like looking at a 1.8x squeezed image on a 2x de-squeezed monitor.

Also, the problem is that Blackmagic does not allow us to use the 2x desqueeze unless the 3.7K anamorphic mode is toggled, but we definitely loose resolution, plus it’s windowed sensor.
I have made a comparison between shooting 6K with my 1.8x anamorphic 35mm lens, and 3.7K mode with 2x desqueeze on camera turned on (actually it is automatically turned on), and we can clearly see the loss of information within the image. All sides are cropped, especially left and right, so definitely not useable. It’s super sad because Blackmagic allows us to use the 1.33 anamorphic desqueeze on any recording modes, which works so well, even put the 1.33 tag for DaVinci Resolve to automatically desqueeze it. It would be so simple for them to add the usual desqueeze ratios that they provide within Resolve (1.25x / 1.3-1.33x / 1.5x / 1.8x / 2.0x) in all recording modes available in camera. Like that, we would at least be able to display status text (cinematographer or director) for external monitors, without having to use such monitors to desqueeze the whole image, and therefore make these texts impossible to read.
Please, Blackmagic, add that to your amazing cameras!

if for that while we're at it (since it would just be a HUD overlay) why not add a golden ratio grid? even my Mi note 10 has it ...

Need it too! For a 1.8 Anamorphic lens.
