Monitor flicking in low light.

PostWed Dec 11, 2013 3:55 pm

Hi, I've noticed strange behavior of the screen of my bmpc.

When the display is set to "video" the (very) low lights- near black are flicking on the screen. No trace of that on the recorded images.

It was upsetting me a bit and I whent back to the seller to show the problem, after test, the problem occured also on his demo camera.

He's explanations was "they use cheap screen" (trad: it's normal to have default for this price). I think it's quiet anoing has it occured anytime when shooting low-light condition and I'm considering it has a manufactor default.

Did you guys had kind of same experience? Could it be a software error? I have find nowhere in the forums talking about that, but You MUST have noticed that if it's happening on your camera.

Try to change your shutter angle and see if it makes a difference. It might just be that the lights are flickering, which is normal and will happen on any camera that is set to the wrong shutter angle for the frequency of light they are emitting.

Yes it isn't light fliwking.

It happens in all area of the screen whit any kind of light, from tungsteen to daylight, as long it as a very low (near black) value inside the screen, only in "video" display mode.

Please do a test whit your specimen if you own one.

I'm really impressed that nobody noticed that before.

Do you have another camera to take a video of the issue? It might be worth contacting BMD support. Sounds like an issue with your camera.

It isn't just his camera. I have the same issue with mine. After doing some experimentation, it is definitely something to do with the monitors "Video" mode.

It doesn't make sense for the monitor to be doing this. No LCD monitor is that bad. It is my belief that this is a firmware issue with the way the camera monitor processes the low light signal in the "Video" mode.

It would be great for BMD to comment on this.

The seller of the bmpc did try whit his demo camera when I went back to the shop for repporting the issue.

We saw exactly the same issue on his camera. Might be some software tricky thing, but if not, this is really anoing.

Yeah I have the same thing on the pocket, I started seeing it as soon as I updated to 1.5.1, I was going to start a topic but then noticed it wasn't in my actual footage or hdmi out so figured it wasn't worth it.

I happens in both Video or Film curve mode but easier to see in video. It's on the darkest shadows and I assume it's a feature not a bug, it looks like it's warning me of crushed shadow detail; like how zebras warn of clipped highlight detail. I tried turning zebras off but the under exposure still flikers so maybe that's a bug (the fact that you can't turn them off) or maybe its really just a horrid LCD lol. ...Or maybe it's the beginning of a false color option :D. Either way I wouldn't worry about it too much.

If you want to test it at home here is my recomendation:
1. Set curve to video.
2. Set ISO to 200
3. Set shutter to 180
4. Point it at some dark shadows (but not the show)
5. Close down the iris until you see a very faint flickering.

Monitor flicker straight after a firmware update is normal, shouldn't stay though...
