SSD Not initialized

PostWed Jul 13, 2022 7:34 am

I just got home from shooting my bmpcc4k footage to a SanDisk Extreme 1TB SSD and now my PC can't mount it. The disk management says it needs to be initialized...I had formatted the drive through the camera before the shoot, it's in exFAT so Windows shouldn't be the problem... Does anybody have a clue? I'm kinda already considering re-recording the HDMI output of the camera to somehow get the footage ... Yikes.

Which version of Windows? Are you using the latest version of camera firmware? Is the media drive on the BMD Authorized list? Any chance your cable to the PC is unreliable?

And finally: 100% sure you used exFAT?
Do you have someone with a Mac around to double check?
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

I had the same problem wth a SSD that was formatted in-cam by a colleague, but not exfat !

My NAS could read the disc, but not my PC.
If you have a NAS, you can try connecting this way ?

This may be a rabbit hole I am sending you down but may be helpful in raising other responses by knowledged people regarding SSDs which are offered to the computer via a dock linked with a SATA cable.

My experience with SSDs formatted in-camera that were labelled by the camera is that when offered to the computer a second time after an earlier download, then reformatting in-camera, the Windows recognises the drive but gets confused, hence the initialisation instruction.

I think also that if a drive is first initialised in a PC under Windows with a volume name like E: for example, the camera adds its own volume number which changes with each in-camera reformat. The PC still identifies the drive by the original volume name. I am not computer tech so please do not take tis as gospel but draw on the wit of others who really know what is going on.

I found that after offloading the drive, I have to meticulously take care to dismount that drive by the eject option in the lower right corner of the windows screen. If I forget, next time that drive is offered to the computer, Windows will find fault with it, try to fix it and then all bets are off because the camera can't see it again.
