3.5mm BMPCC 4k audio question

PostFri Jul 15, 2022 6:36 pm

So I usually shoot with a shotgun xlr mic on my BMPCC 4k, but sometime I want a smaller profile for the camera and bought tiny cheap shotgun with a 3.5mm connection. The issue is that when using it, I'm hearing a low frequency clicking noise on the mic, but only when the camera is recording. It's not super loud, but definitely there.

I'm wondering if anyone else has run into this and if it's the camera or the mic?

I don't get this sound when I have a wireless lav plugged into the 3.5mm jack.

The noise is not present when set to 3.5mm line in, but the audio is way too low to be useable.

3.5mm BMPCC 4k audio question

One possibility: if your cheap mic includes a cheap battery, it may not be fresh. Try putting in the most expensive name brand alkaline battery for starters, new of course.

I hope your cheap microphone is not cheaply made as you may have a faulty connection in the mic that is loosing contact.

Just some cheap shots from me but worth looking at.

Thanks for the tips - it's not battery powered, which might be where the issue is (this is the ic if you're interested: https://www.amazon.com/Microphone-BOYA- ... B8JVS?th=1)

I'll probably be buying a better mic. I was just curious since the noise was only happening while recording, seemingly in time with the timecode readout on the screen.

Thanks, Garrett, for the additional information. I suspected the crackle was from a dying battery as I very recently heard the same kind of intermittent clicks when from a weak battery in headphones. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

Seems odd that it only clicks when recording, in other words when you monitor your audio levels, it’s not clicking and not showing anything odd in the audio level visual display.

How have you defined your Audio tab settings for the mic? Do you have Phantom Off? Can you post a snap of your Audio tab page one?

Have you tried the mic plugged in another recording device-like phone if no other?
