Samsung T7

PostWed Jul 20, 2022 6:29 pm

Hi everyone,

I can seem to find the Samsung T5, So I was wondering if it would be safe to use a Samsung T7 1TB for the BMPCC 6K G2/PRO ?

Thanks,
Henry

No, the T7 has cache issues and will start dropping frames because it can't sustain the write performance.

Stick to media from the official list. Pay attention to follow the sizes listed too, not just the brand.
https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/faq/59037
Note that Samsung isn't on the list at all.

Also, I highly recommend avoiding SSD and going for CFast media instead. Recording to external USB-C drive has four points of potential failure — each of the two USB-C connections, the cable, and the drive. Using Cfast media only has two points of failure — just the card and the slot. Fewer points of failure = better reliability.

Thanks Jamie, I noticed the link you posted is related to URSA Broadcast G2 not the BMPCC 6K G2.
Thanks anyway!

Ah, my mistake. I read that as the broadcast G2. Here's the link for the 6K pocket list:

I wouldn't take that as a guarantee that it will work on the 6K Pocket. The port has to power the drive and it's possible the 12K USB-C port can deliver more than the 6K Pockets do. I'd stick to the recommended list for each camera.

Purchasing recording media that costs 5 times more isn't always a feasible option. If money were no issue, we'd all be shooting on Arris. I've noticed that the T5 is disappearing from stock as well. It is still available on Amazon. While CFast is preferable for a few reasons, I've never dropped a frame even when shooting braw 6k 50 to the T5.

Respectfully, that is hyperbole.

Four Silicon Power CFX310 CFast 2.0 512GB = 2TB for $1120

A 2TB Samsung T5 costs $319

So, CFast media costs 3.5 times more than rolling the dice on Samsung T5. Not 5 times more.

For paid work, this cost difference is less than the cost of the additional risk for lost media with USB-C SSD IMHO.

Several variations on how to look at this decision:

1.) I'm scared it might fail but I have no firsthand experience. Be safe not sorry.
2.) I feel safe already because I have firsthand experience. Don't worry, be happy.

Personally I choose to be safe and use CFast but that is just because I can not afford the risk of problems on location or end up with corrupt media.

Cfast, usbc media, sd can all fail. I’ve had a cfast fail. To combat that, I also record to a video assist as backup. No media is fail safe but cfast is the better choice. Even on my 12k I also record to a video assist. The 4K I record to either my other video assist or an older Ninja I have. You can also record separately on the external monitors without trigger…

The T7's will just cause you grief. I don't know where you are looking for T5s but a simple search on Amazon will yield a few results as of this day (7/21/22).
Samsung T5 (500Gb) - https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-T5-Porta ... 492&sr=8-4 (Recommended over the Samsung T7 or Samsung T5 1Tb)

Samsung T5 (1Tb) - https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-T5-Porta ... 492&sr=8-4

True, anything can fail. It's not an all or nothing question. It's about odds. Wearing a seatbelt won't guarantee you'll survive a car crash, but it will certainly improve your odds of survival.
Look through the forums at what the media type was when recording issues are reported. See the pattern there? The odds are against external SSD.

I did say cfast is the better choice…

Four Silicon Power CFX310 CFast 2.0 is unobtainium in Belgium.
Samsung T5 2TB is only 220 euro ... vat included.

Someone at Blackmagic should test these new T7 shield drives, there continuous write performance is confirmed to be double that of T5. The drive itself is more than quick enough, unlike the original T7.

Any CFAST card here in Belgium is about 800 euro + per TB ... For my kind of shoots I need at least 6x 1TB to finish a short day, that is 5K+ euro of media !

Not really continuous write speed except for photos and other sequential files.
For growing files like videos the speed will drop below the speed of T5.
It is because of the buffer memory on T7 that fills up after few frames when shooting video and it looses its speed.
But for Photos and other sequential files in the other hand it is amazing.

You can get the Angelbird 1 TB CFast card here for EUR 612 excl. VAT
https://www.videodata.de/shop/products/ ... -1-TB.html

If you need 6 you can ask Angelbird directly for a nice discount.

and one from Wise for EUR 526 excl. VAT
https://www.videodata.de/shop/products/ ... -1-TB.html

Then there is the Wise SSD from the official BMD list:
https://www.videodata.de/shop/products/ ... -2-TB.html

Or the G-Drive:
https://www.videodata.de/shop/products/ ... -1-TB.html

The Samsung T7 Shield drives have been tested for the UMP12k:
https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/faq/59030

But you should take into consideration that the UMP12k has USB3.2 while the Pockets only support USB3.1 - so the experience with the Pockets might differ.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.
