What accessories do I buy? (BMPCC6K Pro)

PostSun Jul 24, 2022 10:18 pm

Hi, I just got a Blackmagic 6k pro and a Smallrig cage (I think it's the 3270 version) and I have a few questions about which add-ons to buy. I would appreciate if you could help me, since I've been looking for information about it for days and I get more and more confused instead of clearing my doubts.

1- Lens: I want to make short films with a cinematographic look, besides, I tend to abuse close-ups a lot, but at the same time I like to capture as much scenery as possible.
Do I buy the sigma 18-35 art (if so, I've heard that I should buy an accessory to upgrade the lens to the latest version, is that right?)? Or is there a better option below $1000?

2- battery: I don't know whether to opt for the battery grip or, on the contrary, opt for the V-mount option (or some other). Also I don't know which batteries could be better.

3- Stabilizer: What is the cheapest stabilizer that supports all the weight and is compatible with the size of the Blackmagic? Keep in mind that the stabilizer must fit the size of the battery grip (in case you opt for that option) and I will also add a microphone.
At first I had thought about the Zhiyun Weebill 2 since I like that it has a screen, but I think it would not do a good job, do you think the Crane 3s will work for me?

4- Tripod: I need a tripod (for less than $400) that supports all the weight and size, plus I have to be able to hold the camera vertically. I had thought about using a typical photography tripod, but it might not support all the weight. Another option was to buy a tripod for video cameras and also buy a kind of "bracket" in the shape of an L, but I don't know if it would be compatible with the Blackmagic and with the tripod head.
I have many doubts about all this.

Thank you very much to everyone who informs me and tries to help me :)

Welcome!

1- Lens: I want to make short films with a cinematographic look, besides, I tend to abuse close-ups a lot, but at the same time I like to capture as much scenery as possible.
Do I buy the sigma 18-35 art…

That’s an electronic photography lens, popular with many in the forum. I only use manual cinema prime lenses from the same manufacturer so the Colour of the glass is matched and the lenses have consistent placement of gears where possible. If I was buying primes now, I’d buy budget SLR Magic MicroPrimes (or SLR Magic APO MicroPrimes but they’re over your budget). Quality lenses should last you decades so think of the expense from a long term perspective. You’ll receive lots of good recommendations from others.

If you love closeup work, I’d suggest you buy the ‘f8 lens toolkit’ app. You can input your cameras and lenses you are considering to purchase and see which focal lengths work best with your camera sensor/windows.

2- battery:… battery grip… V-mount option (or some other)...

If you’re going to work outdoors mostly, you’ll want the battery grip with the largest battery capacity they will accommodate. If you’ll work primarily indoors, just keep the camera plugged into its mains power supply. I don’t use grips but a quality high ampere 250Wh V-mount in a bag hanging from the tripod leveling post.

3- Stabilizer: What is the cheapest stabilizer that supports all the weight and is compatible with the size of the Blackmagic?

What’s your rush? Don’t buy the cheapest stabilizer that might work today. Wait until you have the budget and buy something better once you know more about your needs. In the meantime read about real users’ comments. Don’t Blindly Trust YouTube and all manufacturers.

4- Tripod: I need a tripod… for video cameras and also buy a kind of "bracket" in the shape of an L...

You can spend several thousand dollars on a strong tripod and thousands for a smooth video head. $400 is a start and might be adequate in the beginning as a lightweight kit. Others will have recommendations. This Benro holds 8.8 lbs:

This Manfrotto holds over 15 lbs which sounds more practical and might work but it’s leveling is unconventional as there’s no centre post. It can hold the camera very close to the ground. Within your budget:

You will have to locate a L-bracket compatible with your rig. Here’s an example:

Firstly, a warning that the extras could easily be costing more than the camera.

As to 1: any manual lens with an EF mount can work (unless you want additional cost of an adapter)... thing is to try out, borrow, rent, look at other's results to find out what gives you the look you are looking for.... the coverage (focal length) but also any character or particular look. Things can be done with filters or in post, but lenses do also make a difference. Nice thing is that right look might not cost much... even though it could.

As to 2: I use a brick type battery (gold mount) in a pouch on my belt with D-tap cable to camera (in my case a pocket 4K.) I have the D-tap plug into a receptacle mounted on the cage which has a short cable to the camera connection and is fixed so that it does not wiggle in the camera connection. It lasts a long time but costs several hundred dollars. Alternative is to buy a lot of the recommended batteries and keep stopping to pop another in as you go. Even if not filming I like to always keep the camera on and ready so I don't use those batteries (and a bunch of those will likely cost what the brick does.)

As to 3: Save your money here... the camera now has stabilization... put this money into your tripod.

As to 4: Can't have a good enough tripod especially if with a good fluid head will likely cost more than twice or thrice what you stated, maybe $1200.)

And I will add that unless you add a mic and recorder separately, a nice one to mount with the camera is the Rode Video NTG. I got one and it works nicely with the Pocket 4K. It has it's own preamp which helps a lot and has an internal battery charged with a USB. But for what you indicate you want to shoot then likely someone booming a mic for you would be better.

Another (but definitely optional) item would be a larger monitor. Helps with focusing while I use the camera monitor with false color.

And... maybe lights

Great Suggestions from folks above in this thread. I post this with that of a different perspective, an amateur hobbyist just starting out in video.

Lenses: I have Roninon and Meike primes and really enjoy them.

Battery: Both a V mount and the battery grip. With some rigging the V mount works well for me on a tripod where the battery grip can introduce wabble. The battery grip works well for hand held.

Stabilizer: I like both the DJI Ronin S2 (or 3 if you would prefer) and handheld. They give totally different looks, each very recognizable. The gimble gives a floating camera look while the hand held looks more natural if that makes sense. Both require practice, practice, practice. The 6k Pro with the EVF offers a nice three points of contact for handheld.

Tripod. I have both Davis and Sanford and Benro legs that I like. I can't compare to more expensive tripods as I have not used more expensive ones.
