Camera v7.9.1 Released

PostThu Jul 28, 2022 1:53 am

Hi guys,

We've just released Camera v7.9.1 based on some feedback.

1. We've improved the reliability of UBS-C SSD recordings, as well as record start and stop lag time.

2. We've reverted the focus zoom behavior with the scroll wheel. It now defaults to zoom instead of changing the location of the zoomed area.

3. We've fixed an issue where off-speed recording is turned off after entering and exiting playback.

4. We've restored greater than 60 fps recording on the Pocket 4K for the 4K 2.4:1 recording format.

5. We've improved the motion sensor data accuracy of Pocket 4K.

6. We've improved the realiability of lens OIS switch detection for MFT lenses on the Pocket 4K.

7. Updating the camera from older version should be more realiable.

Installed on my Pocket 4K.
Tested the 75 fps for the 4K 2.4:1 recording format.
Thank you BM for this update.

Thank you for this, working great. However, I'm still seeing an issue with Olympus MFT lenses where the Pocket 4K shows an incorrect aperture in the display (f/4.1 instead of f/4.0 and so on).

Maybe an issue:
I get "No Camera or accessory found".
I am doing this just like I did with v 7.9 which had no issues.
Checked the USB connection and it works.
Also uninstalled and reinstalled Camera Setup.
any help???

Nice to see my 100% manual system now correctly shows the Image Stabilize setting Off instead of On. Either way I understand my BRAW includes gyro data, but good housekeeping to have the setting correct.

Continue to be amazed at how the BMPCC4K has grownup over the years without any additional fees for upgrades. It’s a very capable yet inexpensive camera. Thank you.

One thing I noticed is that the Presets did not get deleted... nice.
Although I was hoping that one of the fixes would have been to fix the record button on the screen to not be red when not recording... maybe make it green or anything, but only red while recording.

We're simply reporting what the lens is providing. Turns out that other cameras round the values received to what are the common intervals that you would expect.

Ok, it's just that it showed the expected values before firmware v7.9, so I assume there were changes related to this.

Edit: In case I was mistaken I just downgraded to v7.3, and there it does indeed show the expected values. Not a huge issue in v7.9.1 of course, but it does mess with the metadata.

Thanks for being on top of problems and issuing prompt fixes.

There is one problem I encountered with 7.9 that was not fixed in 7.9.1. I can start a record via my iPhone or iPad with the Bluetooth+ app, but I cannot stop the recording in the app. I have to use the on-camera controls to stop the recording.

Nice to have my Presets preserved, however, the update alphabetized the list so unfortunately they are out of my preferred order.

Yes, definitely - having it green/grey/white or something that's not red while it's not recording

I was testing several external SSD configurations when this new firmware update came out and decided to give it a go since it mentions improved performances with external USB-C drives. One thing I noticed with the new firmware is that it may happen that the camera stops recording without any signal:

  • the record button is still active;
  • the tally light is still on;
  • the recording duration is still progressing, with the font in red;
  • the disk activity led on the drive enclosure is still blinking;

The only detail making it clear that the recording is not advancing is the remaining time recordable on the drive which is stuck to the time when the recording stopped. For example, I started recording on a just-formatted 2TB SSD. In BRAW CR-Q0, I get a 2 hours and 8 minutes estimated recording time. I left the camera rolling while monitoring the tally light. After 30 minutes, I check the screen and everything seems to suggest the recording is still rolling as per the list above but the time remaining time is stuck at 2 hours and 3 minutes when it should be about 1 hour and 40 minutes.

When that happens, the record buttons (both the physical one and the one on the screen) are unresponsive: the only way to exit the deadlock is to turn the camera off. When I turn the camera on and go to play mode, the length of the recorded file is compatible with the remaining time previously reported: I got a single 4-minute long clip recorded file while the rolling duration was way over 30 minutes.

The specific configuration of the SSD+enclosure is surely to blame for the problematic recording. Nevertheless, I never experienced this particular behavior with the previous firmware: previously, the BMPCC 6k Pro would simply stop recording with an exclamation mark on the record icon, the tally light off and the time text on screen reporting the duration of the last clip recorded.

Camera v7.9.1 Released

PostSun Jul 31, 2022 1:33 am

Edit: operator error, there’s no problem with squeeze 1.33x in 7.9.1 or any earlier version. When using the SLR Magic Anamorphot, subjects at Normal distance are squeezed 1.33x; however I was forgetting Near objects are not squeezed 1.33x. Yesterday my objects were only 4’ or 5’ away which is Near and the actual squeeze then is about 1.22x. So the BMD Monitor squeeze factor at 1.33x over compensates. Today I was very careful in setting up a more complex test with the circular objects 20’ away “at Normal distance.” Everything looked good on the camera screen and my DaVinci Resolve monitor. Apologies.

——————/ original post /—————-
I think I found a minor problem when using my manual 1.33x anamorphic adapter. If you don’t set the Monitor squeeze factor to 1.33x, there’s no harm done but its normal to do that. A circle will look like an egg standing on its end.

When I select the 1.33x factor on the Monitor setting, it still looks like a stubby egg lying on its side. That’s not right but its only a display issue as it appears to be using a stronger squeeze factor.

When you bring the egg lying on its side into Resolve 18, without doing any changes it looks like a circle as it should. I define my Master Settings to use DCI Scope and I define my Image Scaling to be Scale Entire Image to Fit. That results in a small letterbox.

You can also use Scale Image with Crop which crops a few columns on the sides. Removes the letterbox.

Hi first time poster here, I installed 7.9.1 on my pocket 4k. Both the Metabones and the Viltrox speedbooster works, but my Olympus FourThirds to M43(MMF-3) adapter isnt recognized by the updates 7.9.1 and 7.9. I had to revert back to 7.3

Agree. I vote for a WHITE record button icon when not recording, and RED when recording.

Also: I'm NOT a fan of the new smaller on-screen font. It's now too small for me to read without eyeglasses, and even then it's too small. I'd happily give up the new "Menu" icon (upper right corner) if necessary to go back to the previous larger font.

Otherwise, I'm very happy about the new firmware. Thank you Blackmagic Design!

Catalina here, i can install (i read that should be big or upper), camera not recognized.
boot from Monterey disk, install, camera upgrade ok...
installer shouldn't install under catalina if is not able to work, that could cause you some moan from people that not read full spec of installer.

I really like the new UI. Great job, Blackmagic! I second the request for a grey/white record button when not recording like it was previously, this big red button freaks me out sometimes when I look at it.

Hi,
I have a problem using a bluetooth remote with the latest update. Previously (with 7.8) every was cool with my little follow focus bluetooth remote I've bought in China. I could start/stop Rec and control focus iris iso shutter. Here is a link to see this remote in action

But now with 7.9 and 7.9.1 I can only start Recording and when I press the button again to stop Rec it doesn't stop. Very frustrating ! Can you restore the old bluetooth command protocol in a future update ?
Or I can I downgrade to 7.8 ? Because when I try I can only downgrade to 7.5.1.
Thanks

Is there any support for updating the firmware in your impressive device? Perhaps you can ask the company for a revision to make it compatible with 7.9.1?

The protocols have changed slightly in the update as you can now directly target all 3 media slots (SD, CFast 2.0, and USB-C SSD) individually, so these guys have to update their firmware to support the new addressing.

Hi BMD Team, Again thank you for the updates !

Discovered Issue: No Audio with onscreen Audio Levels set at -6dB Minimum.

Today on my P4K with 7.9.1 firmware, I reduced the audio level (using camera internal mics) to -6dB because at 0dB it was too loud - close to a live band. Sadly I didn't check the audio meters given -6dB was the lowest, but the resulting BRAW file had no audio. -5.9dB had a pinch of audio but hard at -6dB = "muted audio".
It felt like dial up levels between 0 to -6dB are more like 0 to -59dB where -60dB is mute. Strange curve :)

I can't recall having this operation with the earlier 7.3 firmware. Anyone else found this issue ?

Also +10000 for a grey Record GUI button when not recording - Red is visibly a hot colour and alarming when not recording.

Thanks,
Jeff

I successfully updated the firmware on my BMPCC4K to 7.9.1 but forgot to remove my SD card prior to performing the update. Why are we instructed to remove the SD card prior to updating the firmware and should I be concerned that I performed the firmware update with the SD card still inside the camera?

Thank You.

When I first updated to 7.9.1, I noticed the same, but was not absolutely sure. I have a bit time today and went back to 7.9. I can confirm the autofocus is bit slower than 7.9. It is a scientific test, just an observation. Hopefully someone can confirm.

Re: Camera v7.9.1 Released

PostFri Aug 19, 2022 12:26 am

My initial tests on this update are looking really good, haven't had time yet to stress test things like long recordings in blistering heat yet, but most of my complaints with the 7.9 update have been resolved. (possibly even all of them? we shall see) There are a bunch of changes that didn't make the release notes, but pretty much all the ones that really stopped me from jumping over to the new firmware have been fixed

* unwanted frame rate resets upon footage review, fixed!
* A regrettable interface change that slowed down entering custom shutter speeds, fixed!

and of course the things that made the release notes are all appreciated :-) almost no point in the 4k without that sweet sweet 75fps in 4k raw.

I want to thank the team at black magic for their hard work on this release, so far, its exactly what i was hoping for when it finally came out :-) possibly more notes in a week after testing this on a passion project this weekend :-)

I just updated my 6K Pro to v7.9.1.

Before updating the firmware, I exported my presets to the internal CFast and SD cards. However after the firmware update, the camera is not allowing me to re-import them.

Lastly, I'm also really disappointed with the smaller onscreen text. No need for the onscreen menu icon in the upper right hand corner when we have a hard button for it off-screen. And keeping the record button essentially red whether recording or not is entirely impractical, if not flat out absurd. This must get fixed ASAP.

Just got back from my first longer shoot since updating to v7.9.1 on my P4K. I ran into an issue while recording to my Samsung T5 (1Tb). It recorded with no issues for first couple of takes and then suddenly it wouldn't record past 5sec long - always stopping at the exact same timestamp. I pulled battery out and and put camera back on and still had same issue.

My capture settings:
- Braw CQ 05
- 4k DCI
- Olympus 12-100 Pro f4

I tried switching to Braw Constant Bitrate 12:1 but had exact same issue. Didn't have another storage medium to test unfortunately. After shooting with another camera (not a P4K) I checked back on the P4K and then it was working fine again. Finished the 2 day shoot on the P4K with no further issues.

I never had an issue with the P4K before v7.9 so it seems to be related to the reported bug. Will downgrade firmware until I know this has been resolved.

This EXACT same thing happened to me on my first big shoot with the P4K and then it never happened again.

I would suggest not downgrading and seeing what happens. Good thing you have a backup camera! So many people buy tech and when it doesn't work they blame the product and NOT the fact they didn't have a backup plan.

That's good to know! I'll give it another try.

Thanks

I just found out about this useful thing, very cool. thank you! please tell me if you were able to update it for the new firmware version? or is it not possible? I plan to order it as well.

I updated straight to 7.9.2 and the issue is still there.

Shooting on a bmpcc6kpro with both a t5 1tb and 2tb ssd. I've reset the camera, and reinstalled the update but it still isn't working.

Is there a way to update to an older version of the software? I tried downloading 7.9.1 to try to install it but the camera setup app says that the software is up to date and there's no option to change it to a prior version.

Thanks!

This makes me think maybe I'm not going crazy. Different camera and symptoms, but possibly related. I shot an event 3 days ago with 6K and 6K G2, BRAW 8:1 to Delvin Juggler 1TB drives. Both cameras stopped recording a few seconds after starting. I started recording again and they both continued with no problems for the 75 minute event. Could not reproduce the problem the next day.

I don't if this relates to the problem of the camera not restarting when using external drives. I only use internal cards. But what I learned was that emptying my card of media via my desktop computer does not empty the card for the camera. Rather, I have to reformat the card inside the camera. Perhaps it's the same with external drives?

Pocket 6k firmware 7.9.1
Every file recorded during removing battery is 1.36gb and is not possible to read.
Back to 7.7 all work fine.
Same cfast and same ssd allow my to record hours without problems with camera powered from external battery.
I use four Blackmagic Design batteries.
I the some way recording gyro data’s fight to closing correctly files during power off
Please add an option to record or not gyro dataset

Hi Kristian: Just a heads-up if you're not already aware of this easily reproducible issue:

Of course, I don't know if it's user error on our part, or a bug, but like I said, just FYI. Cheers.

The first time I used my 6k Pro with the new firmware the video track lagged the audio track on the recording. They were totally out of sync when I viewed the file in Resolve or the Blackmagic Raw Viewer app. This has never happened to me before. My audio input was on XLR 2 and I recorded onto a Samsung T5. Has anyone else had a similar problem?
