Tascam Dr-40 vs DR-60d

PostMon Dec 16, 2013 6:27 pm

I currently own the Tascam DR-40. It works pretty great for the price. I also have the Audio-Technica AT987 boom mic. It is very quite on the DR-40 and I have to turn the gain up almost all the way which gives me a lot of noise. My question is...Are the preamps that the DR-60D have an upgrade to the DR-40? Has anyone used them both? Has anyone had any experience with this mic being quite.

Let me know.

Thanks!

Great question. My DR-40's Pre-Amps noisy as all get out. I read customer reviews and heard the 60d is the same. I'd love to hear other options. Once I started using a sound Device Pre I had no issues. Upgrading to an external analog Pre-Amp is the first step I'd suggest.

Can you post a link to what you would recommend? I've been reading the the 60d has much better preamps built in which is one of the highlighted features. Really close to buying one just to try it out.

I think it is better that you buy it first and then you can explore it on. ;) . We were glad to hear your experiences here.

Have both and use mainly the DR60-D. Not had an issue with noise but always use in conjunction with Fethead preamp. Tested with Rode Procaster, NTG1 and Sennheiser MD46

I can recommend the Fethead preamp. Gives me 20dB gain which means lower gain settings on the DR60-D and significantly less noise in the final audio.

Since the Tascam DR-60 was released I did like its form factor to use with the BMPCC.

But today I had a look at the DR-40, which form factor is also good, and I wonder how they compare in sound quality. Has anyone tried that comparison?

My idea is to rig the Pocket, a Lilliput or Ninja Blade and audio recorder all together, adding a battery to power it all. Not a large or heavy battery.

So I wonder which would fit better on such an arrangement: a DR-40 or DR-60
