Please Help Me With Questions About BMPCC!

PostMon Dec 16, 2013 7:40 pm

Hi

I plan to buy a BMPCC camera for aerial filming, since it has high performance and very light-weight. Personally I really like it. However, I do have some worries.

1. Is the BMPCC is currently stable for using or not? Now I heard a lot of rumors, BMPCC has bugs and not good for use now. Please explain!
2. What kind of other lens do you recommend for BMPCC?
3. Have you tried to test the BMPCC for the aerial filming? What does the footage quality look like?

Thanks!

Hi

1. for shooting yes, i think it is , but if you mean there will be no more firmware update, i don't think so, there will be definitely & and that's great because as you know lots of firmware update are not just for fixing previous problem like (1.5.1 • Fixed issue with 180º shutter angle not operating correctly when shooting in 23.98 or 24 fps ) but those are for improving the functionality too ( adding cinema DNG )

2. for choosing lens these are recommended in black magic's FAQ :

The following lenses have been tested to be compatible with the Pocket Cinema Camera. Lenses unlisted may also be compatible but have not been extensively tested.

Panasonic Lumix G Vario 7-14mm f/4.0
Panasonic Lumix G 14mm f/2.5
Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 (with stabilization)
Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 (with stabilization)*
Panasonic Lumix G 35-100mm f/2.8
Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8
Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/2.8
Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 45mm f/1.8
Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm f/1.8
Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II R

* Lens will not retract when camera is powered off. This does not affect functionality of the lens and will be addressed in a software update.

The following lenses have been tested with the Olympus MMF-3 Four Thirds Lens to Micro Four Thirds Lens Mount Adapter. When changing lenses that require the adapter, we recommend press the lens release button on the Pocket Cinema Camera after the lens change to ensure that the camera initiates communication with the Four Thirds lens.

Olympus Zuiko Digital 25mm f/2.8
Olympus Zuiko Digital 35mm f/3.5 Macro

Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 50mm f/2.0 Macro
Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 7-14mm f/4.0
Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 14-35mm F/2.0 SWD
Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 12-60mm f/2.8-4
Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 35-100mm f/2.0
Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 150mm F/2.0

and i personally use Nikon G-series, good for low budget production :)

3. and unfortunately i didn't test or see a test of bmpcc for aerial filming yet !
but as i found Some thing i ll share that here

I hope this helps

Hi, Hamid
Thanks so much for your help!
Are you from BM?
In addition, there is a Zenmuse Gimbal customer from DJI who has modified the Zenmuse Z15-GH3 gimbal to mount BMPCC.
The footage is so good, that's why I trust ZENMUSE and waiting for DJI Zenmuse BMPCC.

What rumors?! Pocket cam is stable and trusty, no question. I don't think you heard rumors. Lies, maybe.

2. What kind of other lens do you recommend for BMPCC?

From your nickname (this is a real names forum, btw!) i guess you have some experience with aerial shots? The same principles apply here: get a wide lens, and some kind of stabilisation. Wide is especially hard with a crop 3 sensor, look for anything below 12 mm. And even if you plan to use a gimbal, i'd still opt for a OIS lens to counteract the vibrations any flying base will produce (maybe except hot air balloons...).

Other things to consider: the pocket cam has a rolling shutter which makes stabilisation even more important; the battery life is only about 45 minutes, might be less in cold air, so plan your shots carefully. There are no automatic settings, you'd either have to manually control iris in flight or ETTR for the worst case before liftoff.

Hi, Mac,

Please don't get me wrong!
Why I am asking questions here is because I want to know more inforamtion which is correct, not I heard. And I didn't say Pocket cam is NOT stable and NOT trusty.
Anyway, I really appreciate your suggestions here, it's very helpful.
Merry Christmas!
