Updating Firmware with SD Card Installed

PostTue Aug 09, 2022 1:18 am

I successfully updated the firmware on my BMPCC4K to 7.9.1 but forgot to remove my SD card prior to performing the update. Why are we instructed to remove the SD card prior to updating the firmware and should I be concerned that I performed the firmware update with the SD card still inside the camera?

Thank You.

For what it’s worth I don’t think I’ve ever taken the sd card out (didn’t know that was a thing) and never had any trouble on my pocket 4k.

Thank you for your response. All of the instructional videos and tutorials say to remove the SD card but none gives the reason why nor repercussions for doing so.

If the Blackmagic Design firmware update instructions don't say you need to remove the SD card, I'd ignore the youtubers. They're probably just copying each other's advice.

I don't have the BMPCC 4K but I've updated my original BMPCC and my two BMMCCs multiple times with the SD card inside, never had any problems.

I have updated my BMD cameras since I got the first BMCC in 2013 - never ever was instructed to remove the media and never saw any adverse effects on my media.

The updated, May, 2022 BMPCC4K, 6K G2 and 6K Pro manual does not mention anything about removing SD or CFAST cards, nor about disconnecting any attachments during the firmware update process. So, there you go.

Well, YouTuber can be your worst and your best source of information, it just depends on your luck ;-)

I completely agree, Robert. I've found great, not so great and just plain bad YouTube tutorials. I am grateful for the helpful information I've found on YouTube.
