To help keep the forum reasonably tidy and hold onto some sanity lets post all your grades of the BMPC 4K test footage shared by Grant in this thread. ;)

Adam there are so many posts here referring to the Pocket Camera as BMPC. Would you consider renaming the thread "BMPC4K Grades" so we can distinguish the threads at a glance of the thread title? Thanks.

Thanks, Adam. Doing the download but I imagine there are many people trying to do that too as I'm only getting about 5 MB/s of a 10 GB zip.

Well the Resolution Seems to be there.. but like it was to be expected Even BM can't work miraculous Magic on the CMOSIS Sensor.. especially the Clipping in Highlights doesn't seem to be handled Nearly as Nice as with the "Classic" BMCC, still digging the "Old" Sensor with the higher Dynamic Range much more... so totally right call from BM to openly advertise it as another Alternative and not a replacement.. eventhough Many ppl here hate BMs Communication strategy I highly Applaud their openness about the "flaws"/cons! Thumbs up ;)

Which clips do you feel did not handle clipping well?

Don't get me wrong.. nothing looked really "bad" in those clip, just compared to the high dynamic range of the BMCC it looked "worse" (I don't really like using this word in this regard) ... the Beach Jetty for example, if you look at the right side of the lamp post that's hit by the sun/light...

The night scene with the streetcar approaching is interesting when you see the headlamps. I thought that was handled well.

Here's my take. Very basic 15-minute grade: OSIRUS LUT + some IR pollution correction on some footage. I didn't touch the highlights or do any extensive correction. You can download the 4K H.264 file (600MB) for best quality.

So now it's this way around? I've been begging other forum users not to use the acronym "BMPC" for the Pocket cam, as it was initially broadly used for the Production cam, while most users back then referred to the Pocket Cinema cam by "BMPCC"; then the news about the Production cam stopped, threads about it went silent, and the original distinction was lost. Now, a mere six months later, we are to accept the adopted acronym for the Pocket and go with a new one for the 4K cam? Funny... ;-)

16mm gives me a claustrophobic feeling.

The footage looked strange to me and I couldn't put my finger on it. But I just figured it out. The flipping camera has better vision than I do. The crispness of the image of even the furthest away objects is greater than what my eyeball can produce when standing there looking into the distance. Very exciting! And I guess I need to get my eyes fixed..

Here are two versions of a frame from Grant Petty's BMPC-4K ProRes HQ footage. The first version is the original 4K ProRes HQ frame scaled to 1080. The 2nd example is the center 1920 x 1080 cropped from the original 4K ProRes HQ. Note: These are JPEG compressed from 4K ProRes HQ.

EDIT: And here's my video example showing Grant's footage scaled & cropped in a 1080p timeline:

I'm encouraged by what I've seen so far!

It's early days yet (kinda), but I'm encouraged by what I've seen so far. Note: These are JPEG compressed from 4K ProRes HQ. I may have screwed something up with the files, so go easy...

Peter, what did you use to downscale? Have you tried to downscale the 4K ProRes 4:2:2 image to a ProRes 4:4:4:4 HD timeline to see if there is any colour or detail improvement? Seeing a side-by-side comparison might be useful but the differences may be lost going to a JPEG from h.264 output.

QuickTime is not displaying the info correctly.

Open then in Resolve or your NLE (FCPX). They are 4K2160p.

Quicktime? Not doing something correctly? Good heavens, whatever next? Talking pictures?

You may have a point. Same thing happened with a Canon 1DC shoot and it's been telling me that my C300 footage is 16bit. Which it clearly isn't. Anyone out there with a fix? My Resolves are busy on something else. Forever in your debt, first born child etc.

Files are defiantly 4K (3840x2160).

QuickTime 10.2 on my grading machine (Mac OS X 10.8.5) displays the correct size and the scaled size.

There seems to be an issue with how QuickTime under 10.9 is displaying the info.

These files are are not the same Film mode we have come to love in the other 2 cameras.

If you simply apply your preferred LUT you will end up with an image that is very over saturated. Most creative look LUTs are expecting LOG or REC709 as their input and these files are somewhere in between.

Grading them in Resolve there is a lot of info. Pulling keys with the qualifier tools is a pleasure as the details is really good.

I'm really happy with what's coming out of the camera.

Having shot tests in 4K RAW on the F5 and F55 last week and run through the post workflow I'm really looking forward to see the RAW files from this camera. If the ProRes is anything to go by we are in a very good place.

Strange. I do not think the night shots are all that bad. They could have done with more detail in the shadows but they don't look like they have been pushed that far. Was also not clear what lens it was shot on, did not look like a fast prime. A nice fast 35mm or 24mm prime would have helped.

I agree Adam I saw the night shots online, and even with compression it didn't look all that bad.
Guess they want to wait for one of the beta testers to work their magic on the low light shots 8-)
