Hardware wishlist

PostThu Sep 08, 2022 6:25 pm

Don't know if a hardware wishlist exists if so I'll move this post.

I would like a simple, small on-camera recorder with no monitor like the atomos used to have.

One already exists, depending on the camera and interface you're looking for.

If you have an URSA line camera:

BMD also had this device before they started making cameras. Not small though since it's for 2.5" SSDs. It's the HyperDeck Shuttle. Not to be confused with the recently released HyperDeck Shuttle HD which is a completely different device.

I remember those but I would want something low profile that would record rec709 or slog 3 directly. No monitor. Just an EVF. Im no engineer but I think it could be possible with maybe some AI.

About a month ago inflation adjustments were announced for Blackmagic products.

Blackmagic Design Price Increases

https://www.newsshooter.com/2022/08/10/ ... increases/

Blackmagic URSA Mini Recorder change from $395 to $425 for a $30 increase.
This is not the older model. This is for the URSA Mini Pro 12K. Currently BH PhotoVideo is still selling them at the $395 price.

Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 12K change from $5995 to $6,385 for a $390 6.5% increase.
Currently Adorama is still selling them at the $5995 price.

Maybe buying Blackmagic cameras is a better place for your money these days than having it in a savings account. You get a 6.5% return on an URSA 12K investment.

I actually love the idea of a small footprint, external BRaw recorder with CF/ SD slots and/or USB-C out (with an SSD mounting array).

Personally I'll never buy a current Video Assist due to it's display and weight, and I guess I'm not the only one. So some external solution for the many cameras that now allow external Braw recording would be great.

Unfortunately, this new model only works with the URSA 12K, so NOT the other URSA line of camera.

I have one of these somewhere around here. I used it to record uncompressed to prores 720p from a JVC-GY HD201EB camera via ...here it comes...component out via a frankenrig of converters. Oh good times.

Was there ever a firmware revision for the Shuttle recorder which got rid of the eight identical sound tracks.

I totally agree with Michael here. This would benefit a ton of folks. Seems perfect for that new Z CAM E2-F6 Pro.

I’d prefer an internal Braw license over another camera dongle.

Good Luck

Even better but isn't Braw license-free? I remember that was said in the original announcement.

Right now I understand it as a symbiosis, with camera manufacturers offering external Braw and BMD selling their Braw recording monitors?

Free not license-free, Braw decoding is subject to the SDK license agreement. Encoding, if ever let out of the sandbox, will likely cost money, or Blackmagic will continue to leverage the IP, ala Prores, to generate income through market share.

Good Luck
