Chris Cronin wrote:We'll see tomorrow. If it's a new cine camera, great! If it's not... well, let's see how the Kinefinity Mavo MKIIs look when footage eventually drops for those.

I wish that BMD would do some in-camera processing like Kinefinity does to get that Alexa-like look that Kinefinity has. As far as I understand, Kinefinity uses Sony sensors, and the Pocket 6K is a Sony sensor, perhaps the same one in the Mavo S35, and yet Kinefiinty is able to pull off some cinema magic with it that beats Pocket 6K image (in my opinion). I think the Mavo LF sensor is same as FX9, or similar. I don't know what Kinefinity is doing, but whatever it is, the cameras' sure render pretty images. And they do it with ProRes.

Frankly, BRAW is cool, but most TV commercial DPs that shoot on Alexa use ProRes 422HQ and when they want the best they use ProRes4444. Rarely does anyone use ARRIRAW. I would prefer an in-camera ProRes processed image that is pretty like Kinefinity over BRAW. Of course with the ProRes4444 option which the Pocket 6K doesn't have.

Don't get me wrong, the Pocket 6K produces beautiful images, but the Mavo S35 is just a little prettier.

God please, I hope the new camera is not a PTZ with the 6K sensor. Boring.

That's funny. Because when I'm mixing some of the top tier tv shows I work on, we usually have scenes in the temp output that haven't been color corrected. And they're most certainly shot in RAW.
I personally don't want a baked in color profile. And always shoot RAW.

I'm talking about TV commercials where the turnaround is fast and it's always the end of the world. Few people have time for ARRIRAW.

Of course if you are mastering for a TV show with archival quality then RAW. I love RAW. I'm just saying I would trade BRAW for a prettier stylized image like Alexa, and Kinefinity does it very well.

Should I make a prediction? Everything I’ve requested over the last 3-Years! It’s all in there. Haha.

We’ll see. I got a clean bill of health from my regular check up. So that means I have organs to sell to buy the new camera.

Also, Blackmagic Coffee Maker finally happening?

If they removed braw, I wouldn't be interested at all.
Furthermore, you can already record with a "prettier image" by baking in a lut, or simply record in one of the already available prores formats.

I would really really like to have a camera with 4 tracks of audio. Stereo ambience (camera mounted), and two wireless mics.

That would be nice. I know a lot of TV people wanting this.

I do hope they will offer uncompressed RAW as an option alongside BRAW for us crazy people that would like to play with it. With NVMEs speed shouldn't be a problem anymore.

I honestly let out a Nooooo when he pulled it up. However it does make sense and leverages the 6K camera investment they have made.

However if they don't bring out a new cinema camera I will be very disappointed.

There will be no new cinema cameras today. It's disappointing. Personally I will have to buy a Red camera now because of needs...not wants. Blackmagic just doesn't have the camera I need.

hopefully they've purged out all the old body and sensor stock to make room for a new cine camera next year... although I think the cine cam lane might be a little too crowded for them to excel, so they're aiming to disrupt the live production/streaming lane as they did to the cine market until everyone else catches up.

Perhaps I didn’t hear correctly given I’m at a car dealer’s getting my car serviced and sitting beside the Muzak loud speaker, but doesn’t the camera record BRAW? Or does it just send BRAW out to another device like the new ATEM Studio ISO to record?

Welp, it's what I expected deep down. BM pivoting further into the broadcast space to escape a crowded and competitive cine camera market. Makes complete business sense, but for anybody holding out for the next great Blackmagic cinema camera... it's a bitter pill.

I don't think they're *done* with cinema cameras obviously, but... not sure we'll see one this year now.

... So, Kinefinity huh?

Kinefinity has a horrible rolling shudder as well as sensor. It's really unusable when compared to other brands for the same price.

I don't know why everyone's so gloomy. They have multiple events like these every year with different focus.

I prefer this to how it was before when "Shipping in July" became a meme because of announced cameras never shipping on time.

It makes sense that they'd pair their studio cameras announcement with the ATEM announcement. It's entirely possible that they'll hold a separate event to announce new cinema cameras.

I'm bummed but also figured it'd be something like this given ATEM being in the title. Wish they didn't have quite so much control over leaks and rumors; it'd be nice to have some sense for whether there's anything interesting in the pipe over the next 6 months or so.

Thanks, Roger. I didn’t find any reference to support for ProRes though. Their marketing material does emphasize that it can be used as a cinema camera but that seems a stretch without ProRes support or a body that is amenable to a cage and rigging. After all we don’t want that precious external USB recorded media to just hang from the relatively weak USB-C connector. EF mount demanded by users? Hmm.

I do like the 7” screen has support for up to 2000 nits so that is very useful outdoors.

I also like the 5.3K option when you want to record UHD media. Exactly comparable to the 2.6K option I often use to deliver HD video in post.

I’m a doc shooter and the Pocket 6k Pro is still a wonderful, useful camera.
An announcement of a camera or no camera doesn’t sway that fact.
I’m starting to need a second camera, in certain situations, but I’m still torn on what to supplement with.

I don’t do gimbals, I don’t use autofocus… I just want a body with a larger sensor size and PL mountable.

So I guess my Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera Coffee Maker wasn't announced today.

Crappy EF mount.
Crappy form factor.
Was really hoping for updated cinema cameras geared towards narrative indie film makers.

Clearly not a priority anymore for Blackmagic.
Hopefully the RAW patent issue will get sorted out and other manufacturers will be able to shoot raw internally

Yeah. I guess these high-end looking commercials shot handheld with a Kinefinity Mavo LF disproves your statement that the rolling shutter is unusable. Kinefinity cameras render beautiful cinematic images, period.

Reconditionning of their existent hardware doesn't surprise me, and what we saw here for broadcast, at that pricepoint is simply incredible. Broadcast TV, live event, concert with the quality of a pocket 6K pro ? Hell yeah, it's gonna look great.

I do wonder.... that R&D on the 12K must have cost them tons of money, and it's not like it's selling like hotcakes. So whats gonna be their next move ?

I'm curious to see where it will all lead to. As the Blackmagic 12K camera is the only model that I know of that can shoot "RAW" in 8K or 4K without cropping the sensor.

Let's hope for the best.

BMD's price/performance ratio is the best in the business, it's so good that we need to be reminded of it continuously.
