"Approved" cameras

PostTue Feb 07, 2023 7:37 pm

helllo,

surfing here and there, I found this link.
https://filmxp.com/the-ultimate-guide-t ... d-cameras/

there are others films suppliers so this point of view is relative. However, I'm curious to know if they are technical explanations ?

hello,

I may missed some readings but I did not saw technical points but only general considerations (legal stuff...etc). Above all, why a high end camera like ursa 12K can't fit a 4K stream ?

Now, if it's only "political" bashing ;)

For the Pockets it is assumed to be the missing extra Timecode sync port and probably also that they have no SDI out.

For the UMP12k there are guesses that the reason is that it does not have the choice to record in ProRes, but only in BRAW.

Well - I'd guess we all would agree that B&H are a reputable source of information on the topic:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/video/features/netflix-approved-what-it-means-and-why-it-matters-for-cinema-cameras/BI/19115/KBID/10779
According to this article "Netflix approved" means that the camera is approved by Netflix for shooting "Netflix Original" content - it does not imply that Netflix will not accept your content if a camera not in this list was used during production.

If Netflix is funding your project, they'll tell you what you can use.

If they're not you can use anything you want.

hi Mark,

of course, the one who pay, also order

I was just intrigate why 12K was not on the list as this camera seems to be a high end product. Before Robert and Daniel answers, I was wondering if it was a technical lack, a quality issue... In fact, It's just a customer choice.
