New Samyang 10mm - perfect for BMCC?

PostFri Jan 17, 2014 11:14 pm

Hey all,

This seems like a super wide lens which should suit the BMCC nicely, yeah? I badly need to get something wide for my EF (widest I have is 18) so looking at this. I guess we won't know 'til its released but what do you think? Interested in options. I was looking at the Tokina 11-16 but might hold out for this.

Afaik no-one posted about this lens yet so apologies if this topic has been posted already.

I think it would be good but I gotta say, I love the versatility of the Tokina 11-16mm on the BMCC. I actually end up hanging around 14mm.

Either way, wides like this are a must for this cam with the crop factor.

i have the rokinon 8mm (it's aps-c) and the field of view is amazingly wide enough for everything I need :D

the BIG issue is that it is not sharp at all wide open (3.5) but does sharpen up nicely once stopped down. (f8-f11)

Which tends to work out ok in daylight since you cant use filters with it (unless in a mattebox) so you'll be in that range anyway.

But not very functional for low-light / interiors

I built an adapter ring and can use 82mm filters with the Samyang 8mm on the BMCC. Works great!

The Samyang 10mm has one huge drawback: because of its curved front element, it doesn't have a filter thread. If you film in bright sunlight, have the camera at ISO 800 and close aperture to f22 (not recommended for best image quality btw.), you'd need a shutter speed of 1/400 in order not to overexpose. That's a shutter angle of 21.6 degrees at 24fps (which the BMC doesn't even provide).

To film with 180 degrees and f8 under the same conditions, you would need an ND64 filter in front of the lens. The only solution would the use of a matte box and 4x4 filters.

In German Ebay I found the Kowa 8mm for MFT under this number: 21355388033

Looks like the Chinese seller is using original new Kowa lenses and just attaching a MFT mount. Regarding flange distance he did a good job, infinity is spot on with my camera.

It's comes quite fast, and it seems worth it's money. Pretty heavy mustache distortion, but even my Schneider 10mm has it (albeit less).

I'll see if i can prepare a few samples on the weekend.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

That will not work on the EF mount BMCC, which the 10mm Samyang will.

Thank you Uli, but I am having no success finding the item on eBay, that number does not come up for me even if I search for it on the German eBay site?

I'm not a huge fan of the vintage c-mount lenses on the black magic. The contrast is just not as good, and getting the colors you get from L glass, or the Rokinon can be very difficult.

The 14mm 2.8 pancake is really really nice on the black magic camera. I tried one the other day at a camera shop and was very impressed.

I think at this point, buying Full Frame Canon glass is the best bet, that way when the speed booster comes out, you will be ready to go. Also, it is compatible with a 5d, etc.

Well the KOWA is definitely not a vintage lens. Its very well built and at least the more expensive verdion (8.5mm Sold for about 1.3-1.5k EUR!) is extremely sharp, used it several times on the Sony 1/2" 4K sensor and it was the only C-Mount lens that had enough Resolution for/with this sensor!
I can only highly recommend that one, would Hope this One isnt much worse.. looking forward to anybody posting Full res Test Frames - thx!

The Kowa 6mm f/1.8, 2 Megapixel resolution, 1" Sensor machine vision C-mount fits the Pocket Cinema Camera with a Metabones C-Mount Adapter. It fully covers the sensor and gets WIDE. I will be using it in part shooting a cute short next time I drive coast to coast, which is in about 11 days.

Better yet, word is that Kowa will be doing an M43 mount for its entire series of these lenses.
