Noise on BMPCC4K at 400 iso

PostTue Mar 14, 2023 11:21 pm

I am noticing noise in shadow even at 400 iso. Maybe it's my impression, but is there a way that it could have got damaged or degraded or closed calibration? Some cinema cameras must be calibrated to reduce fixed noise patterns based on temp or other variables (e.g. RED CAMERAS).
Is there any option to reduce noise, does pixel refresh work?
Is there an optimal shooting condition for this specific model?

Some told me to overexpose and pull down in post but I don't wanna renounce to highlights details.
I am on the latest firmware installed with Blackmagic Camera 8.0 Update (the one released on the 24th Feb 2023).

Like I said on Reddit: show us an exported still from a braw clip. You can do so from Resolve. Otherwise it's just pure guessing. Is there noise after the color space transform? Because if you exposed correctly (and normalized the footage from log to rec709 normally) there shouldn't be much noise of any in my experience.

If you're shooting Log like, for example, Prores, you can ETTR and then pull down in post to do so. If you're shooting in RAW, in this case, BRAW, you don't have to ETTR.

I should have uploaded it to the post. Isn't it showing? This is my first time on the BMD forum.

After you upload the pic select “place inline” to embed it.

- Save a frame in BRAW from the RAW tab in DR.
- Upload it to a free cloud service like DropBox, Google Drive or such.
– Post the link here with a space somewhere in the URL.

If you have noise at 400 ISO, you don't have enough light.

Lots of times I have noise on shadow areas with p6k pro even in daylight (sun at beach for example) situations, with ISO 400 or less... I noticed p4k has more noise after gen5 update too. I hav both 6kp and p4k. I was one of the first who bought p4k here in Brazil when it launched years ago... the image was TOO MUCH VERY CLEANNER then now, even in low light with ISO 3200 or 6400...really don´t know what BM did with updates.

Not much we can do to help you without you supplying and sharing an image to show what you are seeing.

When I first got my P4K, I ran some outdoor, bright daylight BRAW test shots at 400 ISO of my black car.

The sky was great, grass and street very nice, car was noisy as f#@$. I had less shadow noise on the original Pocket at 1600 ISO shooting a dark banquet hall (wedding).

Very disappointing performance. :(
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

These are meaningless claims without examples. Under-exposed areas of a shot, regardless of iso, will be noisy. If there 15 stops in the shot and the sensor has a 11, the shadows are going to be noisy. This shouldn't be news to anyone.

Properly exposed, the BMPCC 4K at ISO 400 is not noisy.

He doesn’t seem to care, Sean, I even explained above how to do it. Case closed.
