Studio 6K Pro - GenLock, 4.6K HFR Update

PostMon Mar 20, 2023 5:58 pm

First, I wanted to thank Blackmagic Design for implementing my proposal last year by email, of a "Studio" variant of the Pocket Cinema 6K Pro. It is much appreciated. That said, I did have a couple of questions.

I hope to use the camera for indie Virtual Production in Unreal, but this requires GenLock. Since the new camera obviously doesn't include this, can I attach a GenLock device to the SDI In port, or do I need the new Blackmagic Studio Converter as well (using its Ref In port).

Another reason was I noticed that, whilst much more expensive, the URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2 uses the same 6K Super35 sensor. Therefore, to make Studio 6K Pro and Pocket Cinema 6K G2/Pro models more accessible for Virtual Production, would it be possible to investigate a future firmware update for HFR, with Blackmagic RAW 8:1 and ProRes 422 HQ, at 4.6K Full and UHD Windowed resolutions?

The Ursa Mini Pro 4.6K G2 uses a 4.6K s35 sensor, it's a totally different sensor. It is the Ursa Broadcast G2 that has the same 6K s35 sensor as the 6K Pocket models and the 6K Studio Pro.

The URSA G2's product page made it sound as though it was a 6K Super35 sensor. That is unfortunate, as the camera is expensive and not suitable for beginners, so some of Blackmagic's more affordable models could support Indie Virtual Production better.

However, my other question about GenLock stands - do I need the Studio Converter as well the camera, or is it just an upgrade to improve my workflow later?

Burst or TLS will require the Studio Converter. The studio cams can also sync to SDI input.

Good Luck

Yes, that's the Broadcast G2. Not the 4.6K G2. It seems that you've got the two models confused.

The Ursa Mini Pro 4.6K G2 has a s35 4.6K sensor

Same body style between them, but different sensors and features.
