Camera Software 8.1 on Pocket 6K original

I am working with a Tokina 11-20mm F2.8 CF lens on one of my original Pocket 6K cameras.
Software version 8.1 does not recognize or change the Tokina's Iris.
Canon lenses do work with version 8.1.
I had to downgrade to software version 7.9.1 since I need the Tokina zoom on this camera.
Thanks in advance for fixing this bug.

When bug will be fixed, please let us know.
As I also have a Tokina 11-20 and after your post I decided to not upgrade until the bug will be fixed.

All sigma lenses, particularly 18-35,50-100mm works?
What about other Tokina brand fixrd or zoom lenses does their iris or autofocus not working as well?

Today BM released new firmware update Blackmagic Camera 8.1.1 Update.
Do you aware, did they fixed the bug and Tokina Iris will work now?

The update is just for studio cameras, so won't update 6K Pros etc
I don't know if it's changed anything for the studio cameras, it didn't mention it in the release notes

I updated to 8.1.1 and my Tokina zoom does not register Iris data. I hope there will be a fix soon. If I downgrade I will lose the vertical video addition which comes in handy for my work. But I'd rather have control over my lens.
UPDATE: (05/15/23) I downgraded to 7.9.2 and I was able to regain full control over my Tokina 11-16.

I did but their answer was there was no one else with this bug so it will not be fixed. I hope more people with the same problem will read this so I’m not the only one anymore and thus maybe it will then be solved.

Hello Everyone,
I wanted to report I have the same problem as the others. My setup is as follows:
Blackmagic Pocket 6k Pro with firmware 8.1
Tokina atx-i 11-20mm f/2.8 CF Lens for Canon EF
On my screen, I have no control over the IRIS, as you see it shows it is blank. I have opened a ticket with Blackmagic Support

I wanted to report back, I got a response from my blackmagic support ticket.
They stated: "What you've described is a known issue. We're working to rectify it but it's not known when a fix will be available. Kindly accept our apologies for this situation."

I have the same camera, the same problem, and the same reply from Blackmagic. My Canon lens will autofocus. My Sigma 21-35mm used to auto focus and stopped with the 8.1 update. Reverting didn’t fix the problem.
I’m a solo content creator. I realize auto focus isn’t going to be as good as setting focus manually with a good eye. But being one guy I’m doing what I can. I rely on autofocus using the app.
I’m glad to have a lens that works but it’s a basic 28-80mm, think of the first lens you ever had that you outgrew in a week. The Sigma is a lot better.
Since reverting didn’t work, anyone have any other suggestions? Is there a reset procedure or something? Any help is appreciated since it seems like BMD is in no rush to fix this.

If you download and install a previous version of the firmware everything should work fine. You can choose which version you want.

Reverting should work. Delete the current version from your computer, get the older one and you're good to go. I used that several times with the UMP 4.6K when testing DNG and BRAW without and with the RAWlite OLPF.

Very much. Perfect balance between suppression of moiré and sharpness. Plus some extra IR suppression.

Update on my situation.
I downgraded to Software 7.9.1 as recommended. That didn't fix the problem, initially.
I followed another thread and restarted the camera with Auto Focus held down, and reloaded the firmware. Still didn't fix.
Then I rebooted the camera again with the known good lens.
Then I turned the camera off and changed to the Sigma lens, which then started working once the camera was turned on.
All's well that ends well, I guess

Seems a San disk, if you check the list few San disk are approved, and not for fps declared from user.
From what I remember few disk can sustain Q0 at that resolution at 50 fps.
today i check, it's a SANDISK EXTREME V2, BMD suggest it on their support only for prores HQ in 1080 for pocket 6k, never could reach a 50fps in Q0.
it's a joke.

do you think only few guys here had pocket 6k and these lenses?
usually if people not have problem dont do post "here all ok"

now the goal of this thread is find a solution for you and other people that had problem

i read also about many others lenses, also with canon that gives problems with some pocket6k, but i had many of lenses declared with problem and not give me same problems, that mean we three different scenarios:
1) pocket6k g1 build in different batch with different hardware (happened with pocket 4k, three different hardware due different display from what we can know).
2) pocket 6k g1 same hardware ever, different firmware/hardware on lenses
3) both elements.
for canon is simplier to update, you check website, attach to a canon camera and update firmware.
for sigma you need dock to put lenses and update, if firmware exist (not all lenses are updated).
if i would be near you i would be happy to help you to update firmware of lenses with my dock, but from your firm, we are too far...
ps tokina or sigma 11-20? in first post you told tokina, know sigma, i tried to found infos about firmware update of sigma 11-20 to try to help you, but i not found, and now i read in the first post that you wrote tokina.
my good experience is about sigma and canon lenses, not with tokina.

Carlo, thanks for checking. as I checked with my lenses today, some Sigma and others Canon, everyone of them had the Iris displayed without issues on 8.1. Here are all the EF lenses that’s working on my Original P6K (as tested today)
Sigma 16-35 ART F1.8
Sigma 17-55 F2.8
Canon 80-200 L F4
Canon 50 F1.4
Rokinon Cine Prime 24, 35, 50, 80, 135 T1.5
EDIT: Sorry, on the UMP4.6K G2, the Iris works. Not on P6K.
Tokina 11-20 ATX-I F2.8
I hope this helps others too.

I am still hoping Blackmagic will fix the issue and release a new firmware that functions with these lenses as the old firmware does.

EF unfortunately is a reverse engeeneering mount when build from not Canon builder.
Canon never release spec to develop it or electronic infos, that mean mechanical mount is easy to build, all electronic is a bit more complex to have full working ever, on Canon body.
here we have dual different reverse engeneering, from lens brand (tokina, sigma etc) and from camera brand(bmd), more chances of misunderstanding.

What I meant is it displays the f/stop on the display when you manually adjust the Iris on the Roki. It does not use the electronics.

I have a canon lens that does this. All of my other lenses (all Canon) work fine. However my 100-400 f4.5L (gen 1) shows no iris info, no AF, and no stabilization with firmware 8.1.1. If I down grade to 7.9.1 it works fine. This is on a BMPCC 6K g2. I understand that BM is reverse engineering the EF mount communication protocol, and that is a bit of a game of whack-a-mole. It may be that they need to expose more setup options: i.e. select "EF protocol 1", "EF protocol 2", etc... so if your lens doesn't work, you can try a different BM protocol version.

Don't waste your time downloading software 8.3, it doesn't even install on the Pocket 6K Original.
I just read that Blackmagic is going away from EF-Mount in favor of L-Mount, which is an open standard with published specs. Probably for the best but hopefully they won't strand those of us with EF-Mount cameras.

Bought the Tokina atx-i 11-20mm F2.8 this week, just to find out that I can't see or control the iris from my BMPCC6KP as well.
Iris works and is controllable with my other EF mount camera.
I'm not planning on downgrading the firmware, every other lens works fine with the 6KP.
Opening a ticket seems useless since the issue hasn't been fixed since april.

6k g1 or G2? I had 6k g1 and sigma 18-35 and work fine.
Try to downgrade, reset cam, upgrade.
To put the camera into recovery mode. To do this:
i. Disconnect all power sources and remove the battery to ensure that the camera is totally powered down.
ii. Connect power to the camera and power it up while holding down the focus button.
iii. Camera will power up with a blank screen and the fan should be running.
2. Once the camera is powered up in recovery mode, launch Blackmagic Camera Setup and connect the camera to the computer via USB. This should now allow the camera to be detected by the computer. Click on the ‘Update’ button and allow the process to complete.
3. Once the update is completed, power cycle the camera. Then install Camera

Thanks for the suggestion Carlo.
Unfortunately it does not work for me.
I walked through your steps with one of my Pocket 6K g1 bodies:
- Tokina 11-20 ATX-I F2.8 CF attached, camera software 7.9.1:
Iris control works. - Powered down, no power connected, connected power to 12V Weipu SF6, turned on camera into recovery mode, updated software to 8.1, power cycled:
Iris control does NOT work. - No lens attached, powered down, no power connected, connected power to 12V Weipu SF6, turned on camera into recovery mode, downgraded software to 7.9.1, power cycled:
Tokina 11-20 ATX-I F2.8 CF attached, Iris control works. - Upgraded again in recovery mode to software 8.1 without any lens attached, power cycled:
Iris control does NOT work.
I guess I am stuck with software version 7.9.1 until BM decides to fix the issue if at all.
This is not really what I am used to with BM customer care.

we tried what we can.
to be honest bmd allow us more than many other brand allow us.
Most of other brand that i use not allow me to downgrade firmware, on phone, on cameras, on every tool i use. They are not perfect, right, but who is it?
actually we can downgrade and do a lots of things, for example i tested my ump g1 with latest firmware, good... may be, but earning custom framing and fractional iso (that not i need) force me to loose CDNG.
I downgrade firmware to version where i had at same time CDNG and Braw, the best of both world.
most of other cameras not allow me to do that.
On sony when i had similar accident like yours with sigma lenses, i cannot go back on firmware, then i should keep my lens with less accurate AF. Ones of reasons that i go far from Sony mirrorless.
