BMPCC 8.1 Firmware - Changing stills to .braw

PostSun Apr 16, 2023 6:48 pm

Hello BlackMagicDesign.

Now that you've changed the sill files from CinemaDNG to BRAW, Can you please stop putting them into that "Stills" subfolder!?

It is most annoying.

Best Regards,
Shawn

I agree.

Because the camera records the new BRAW stills into the Stills directory on the recording media, the camera can't play and display them on its LCD.

As a test, after shooting BRAW still(s), connect the media to a computer and move the BRAW still(s) to the main directory level of the media. Then insert/connect the media in the camera ... the camera can now play the BRAW still(s) -- just like any other BRAW file.

Blackmagic: Please eliminate the Stills directory! Cheers & thank you!

... oh, and Blackmagic, while you're at it:

Enable a user preference to record Still(s) at highest-quality BRAW (Constant Quality, Q0) regardless of the current camera BRAW motion-video setting.

I understand certain other setting choices (resolution, etc.) may not be compatible with recording a Still concurrent with video recording, but perhaps a Stills-specific compression level (different than the video compression level) can work w/o causing a dropped frame in the video. Maybe?

I want the motion files on the root of the storage medium.

I don't want still in the same place.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I hear you. If Blackmagic could enable the camera firmware to write, read & play the BRAW stills to/from the Stills directory, I'd be OK with that.

Can you elaborate as to why? Its easy to tell them apart (by file size)

I totally agree with you. I hope Blackmagic make this change.

I can't edit the taken photos (braw format) with Lightroom and PS anymore :(((

I think the benefit of this, is that is is easier to match the stills to the video shot since you can now just copy the grade over without any additional adjustments. Instead of editing in LR you will be confined to DR.

Blackmagic Design – why did you remove CDNG from stills? How can I edit stills now? I'm using Lightroom and Photoshop that don't support BRAW? I think CaptureOne doesn't too. Why, oh why?

I tried out the stills with firmware 8.1 and I found when using both the camera stills button and setting function 3 to Stills, there is too long a delay in the picture stills icon appearing on the monitor. Don’t know if the picture is actually captured when I release the shutter button and it’s only the stills confirmation icon that is slow. If the delay is in the capture of the frame, it’s not good when you’re shooting action.

BMPCC 8.1 Firmware - Changing stills to .braw

PostTue Apr 18, 2023 12:17 am

As I would prefer DNG used by ON1 photo app, I’ll just set the video to ProRes and take DNG stills so not an issue the way I work. Stills and video are two different shoots for me.

Edit
A single CinemaDNG frame is correctly referred to as DNG in photo editing software.

Thank you BlackMagic for the new option to shoot BRAW stills with my BMPCC 6K. However, I don't know what software I can view and color edit the files in. Surely the only option isn't to color correct them in Davinci Resolve, grab a still and then output to a JPG.

Perhaps, BlackMagic might want to consider a dedicated BRAW still viewer and color editor.

Meanwhile, does anyone know how what software works with the BRAW still file?

Is this optional? I would prefer stills staying DNG

Can CDNG be a setting option instead of completely replaced by BRAW? I prefer DNG because of compatibility with the photo editing software I use and I don’t want another photo editing software just so I can edit BRAW stills.

Please put back DNG still support. Storage is cheap these days.

Having the ability to choose DNG over BRAW would be ideal.

Upgrading to the latest firmware with the stills now being BRAW had me hoping that the stills could be previewed in camera. This is not the case and definitely an over site.

I can see the frustration with others who use Photoshop/Light Room/Capture One as their photo editing applications. For this, Maybe Assimilate Scratch PlayPro would work in the conversion from BRAW to DNG?

I do most my still editing in Resolve and use the Adobe Raw Converter to convert everything to DNG, so using something like Scratch to go BRAW to DNG would fit into a similar workflow for me. And it can convert ProRes RAW to CinemaDNG as well!

You can but the extra steps is not ideal for my workflow.

I would like to stay with dng for stills too. It would be nice to implement that option to choose preferred still record format if possible.

The developer of an app called Graphicconverter is actually working on implementing Braw on my request. It works a bit like in Adobe Bridge, which is very nice I think.
