Metabones XL 0.64x on BMPCC OG

PostThu Jun 08, 2023 4:32 pm

Hey everyone it's been a long time since I've been on here. I'm resurrecting a couple of the original pocket cams
and I want to pair them with some stabilized Canon lenses and just wanted to double check to see if the Metabones XL will work with them as a far as electronics and focusing. I've used them with the Nikon BMPCC speed booster in the past but no experience with the EF. Thanks for any help.

I have the original Metabones (first version released) for the BMPCC OG and aperture works on my Sigma Lenses. And if I remember OS (physical switch) Sigma 17-50 F2.8 works as well.

So in theory it should work with Canon lenses, except for the EF-S Canon branded lenses I think. The rear on those protrudes too much.

I currently use a Viltrox EF-M1 for our BMPC4K. And aperture works with this as well.

OG bmpcc Metabones 0.58 works with IS and canon 17-55 IS 2.8.
I also have 0.64 bmcc T - EF which i never tried to fit on pocket bmpcc OG but if noone answers it here i can try and test and advice you back in day or two as i am not home atm.

Ok,

Firstly, warning, there are a few Metabones that are called XL 0.64, example
(BMPCC4K T XL 0.64, EF - MFT T XL 0.64, BMCC T - EF 0.64)

This can really be confusing...

I have just tested pocket OG (BMPCC OG) below this version BMCC T - EF 0.64 designed for BMCC 2.5K MFT to EF glass.
https://www.metabones.com/products/deta ... f-bmcc-bt1

Note, Canon EF-S lenses are not officially supported but Canon 17-55 2.8m EF-S only requires minor mod, plastic ring at the back of the glass element to be removed, simply zooming out and gently pulling it out. It can also be easily put back in by zooming out and gently pushing it in.

This lens Metabones combo really works well on bmpcc OG and I can confirm it "talks" to bmpcc OG.
Image stabilisation, Iris and auto focus function works, really well, effectively turning 17 - 55 IS 2.8f to nice fast stabilised very sharp zoom with nice image approx. equivalent S35 f1.8 (21-67mm).

I took off the rear plastic part of the fantastic Canon EF-S 17-55mm 2.8, too (the best IS of any lens I ever used). It's a simple, instantly reversible process, you just need the guts to do it:

The guy uses a tool but I remember being able to just pull it off and put it back on with my fingers.

I also modified a EF-S 18-55mm and EF-S 55-250mm to fit the Metabones x0.58 on the BMPCC OG, aperture + IS worked normal but it was a much more meticulous process than with the 17-55 2.8.

According to the grid on their website, you can use the Metabones Speed Booster BMPCC4K XL (0.64x) on the OG BMPCC FHD. Although it can be mounted, the image circle that is projected is larger than the full sensor. You will be using the center window of the lens.

Ideally, you should use the Metabones Speed Booster Adapter SUPER16 Version (0.58x) to get the full field of view of the full frame lens.

I would avoid the regular MFT Speed Booster and get a Blackmagic version, since it mounts the lens slightly closer due to the lack of an OLPF filter covering the sensor. It will fit, but infinity focus may be softer at the wider focal lengths.
