Wide Fast lens for BM Pocket Camera

PostFri Feb 07, 2014 4:01 am

Hey All,

Looking to get the pocket camera for architectural use and was hoping for advice on a lens.

I was hoping to use my Nikon 16-35 with the Metabones Speedbooster but they are out of stock everywhere for the next month or so - I can't wait that long as I have clients waiting so does anyone have good alternatives?

The camera will be used on a tripod with slider so not sure how important image stabilization is.

Thanks!

Fast and wide?
The Panasonic 14mm f2.5 works extremely well.

Plus, the BMPCC fits in your pocket with this pancake.

I'm get my Panasonic 12-35 f2.8 with Power OIS (3rd OIS generation)
tonight to replace my 14-45 OIS. The 12mm end should be fast, wide and
even stabilized (Handheld/glidecam/shoulder). So if you can live with more
motion blur and depth of focus you can go above 180° while handeld.

The 17.5mm f0.95 Voightländer is extremely well build but I find it somewhat soft.
However f0.95 is hard to beat of you want it to be fast. It's no longer that wide of cause.

Seconding the Panny 14mm 2.5, looks really great and sharp on the Pocket. I picked up one on EBay for less than $200.

14 is not wide. 2.5 is not fast. Sure, the size is nice.

Smckenzie mentioned the 16-35, thus we know what is considered wide and fast.
Wider then 15 the there's only the 14mm 12-35 and the Super distorted 9-X and 7-X fisheyes.

I dunno I have a 9.5mm T1.3 for the pocket..but I suppose that is pretty much out of the range of affordability. There's also a really nice non fish eye 8mm I know of... but again that's about the cost of a nice car.

Sorry, I don't understand you.
Did you mean the oly 9-18 and pana 7-14 ?
Both are wide but not fast.

Theres the slrm 12mm/1.6. Wide and fast. Or the oly 12mm/2.0.

Or speedbooster solutions.

Doesn't the SLRM and Lumix lenses retain the crop factor of the pocket camera's sensor where as with the speed booster it reduces it?

The lenses aren't so much so "crop factored," as they have a narrower FoV owing to the smaller sensor on the camera-- a 12mm is almost akin to a 24mm on something like an Alexa.
If you want something really wide you're in the 9mm range which'll give you a FoV akin to an 18mm on a motion picture camera (e.g. not a FF, but closer to APS-C). If you're looking for a Terry Gilliam type feel, who was fond of a 14mm (on 35mm motion picture) you'd be looking for around a 7mm lens.

Ah,
SLR Magic Hyper Prime

I forgot about that one.

What's your idea about higher quality wide angle converters?
That could combine with a stabilized lens when the wide angle is chosen to hide shaking in handheld.
The BMPCC is very light on mass.

The new SLR Magic 12mm 1.4 is a nice lens, eaiser to use than the "hour glass" shaped earlier version. Follow focus gear is now part of lens. Lens has a nice "feel" and adds "mass" when mounted on the Pocket camera and lens mount is tighter than the previous model.

I ordered my pocket speedbooster from B&H last week, got it last Thurs; guess it sold out soon after.
I'm using it with my Sigma 30mm 1.4, looks awesome.
Get the speedbooster.
I just sent you a pm about (possibly) ordering the BMPCC speedbooster today, directly from metabones.

The 1.4 is a 35mm lens... In case anyone is searching.
I just found this
"Please read this before buying the SLR Magic 35mm T1.4.

I found a big flaw with the SLR Magic 35mm T1.4 for anyone who plans to use focus markers. The focus ring is unreliable for repeat focusing. If you just focus from point A to point B, it's fine, but if you find a third point and go back, it'll throw all the markers off"

the 14mm 2.5 is great but shoot in RAW if you can as it's not very very sharp. Not saying it's un-sharp but shoot RAW for best results with it.

I also have the 12mm 1.6 slrmagic hyperprime

Both great lenses for different uses.

Schneider Cinegon 1.8/10 c-mount is nearly rectilinear if that's important for your architectural work. More rectilinear than any other lens mentioned so far - probably similar to the 16-35 + SB, which should have very slight barrel distortion. It's c-mount and you must get the one with the wide front (55mm filter thread) to cover the Pocket sensor. Max sharpness in the corners is around f/8, though center is sharp from WO. It does flare shooting into light, but if the source is out of the frame it's usually not too bad.

Or you could just use a Tokina 11-16 with plain "G" adapter.
