Colour Generations?

PostThu Aug 10, 2023 3:00 pm

Does anyone know if there's a list of the Blackmagic cameras and firmware that the colour generations would be on?

I'm thinking more so it'd be good to know for the older cameras, but also the newer ones if you roll back a firmware what colour generation is connected to which firmware.

Don't think there is a Gen2....My Production Camera decodes either as Gen1 or Gen4. So I'm assuming Ursa and Ursa Mini 4K are the same since its the same sensor.

You can't record with Gen4 colour in camera on the BMPCC or BMCC, but I believe Resolve can decode the DNGs as Gen4.

Color Science upon camera release;

Gen 1 BMCC, BMPCC, BMMCC, Production Camera, Big Ursa

Gen 2 was the prototype color science of the UM46, it only existed for some demo footage. I don't believe any production cameras ever used it.

Gen 3 UM4k, UM46, UM46Pro

Gen 4 UBG1, P4K, P6k

Gen 5 P6kPro, UM12k, UBG2

Some of the pockets can switch between G4 and G5, and some of the Ursa Minis can switch between G3 and G4.

Good Luck

Thanks Alex and Howard for those details. I’ve updated my first post so hopefully it’s complete now.

If ever in doubt about what color gen your camera/firmware is recording, the metadata panel in Resolve will always tell you the color gen of any BMD camera file that you load into the media pool.
