braw feature request / camera option: segmented recording.

PostFri Aug 18, 2023 9:30 pm

i adore braw, a modern codec with many active feature.
some request for future update :-D
request 1
Recently after motion data addition seems happened more frequently corrupted files, i would like to have an additional option on cameras to record xx gb segments of video, i mean like on old BC cameras where files are closed at 4gb to be compatible with every kind of File system.
if i can choose to record segments of 10 minutes at time, or xx gb i'm sure that if something happened, i not waste all 3h videos, but last xx minutes no more.
For who work in animal documentary can easely keep good part and trash others parts instead to trim in resolve.
actually braw can record on dual card and be reconnected on playback, can record one frame at time (timelapse), and more, i think is not so difficult to add a closing time every xx, i suspect that's only a matter of camera power and cache space (i hope will be possibile with actual camera, or a suggest for future developing on cameras).

request 2 : ability to apply different LUT in playback (we just can do that), but keep on file to see that later in the sidecar. i often use tech lut to see better (focus lut// bw lut // +2 or 3 stop to focus better in low light) but i would like to embed other kind of lut.

request 3: ability from resolve to re-encode braw without color or others operations.
sometimes i shoot in higher quality that i need, i would like to change mode from q0 to q3, but actually i can't.

If you are already using motion detection software/hardware to start your recordings, what media are you using that frequently has corrupted files? Does your motion detection also have an ability to turn off your camera after a period with no motion detected?

Can you use a LIDAR system to focus your lenses for your use case?

Sounds like you might have the wrong camera and the wrong codec for this use case. It seems you want a high definition recording from a monochrome security camera. These solutions must exist.

Hi Rick,
may i explained in a wrong way.

request 1 : i not haven't corrupted files (just in some very hard test where i removing battery), but if you check the forum, after motion data gyro update the problems of corrupted files have grown exponentially.
On longer files ability to split recording in smaller part could be useful.

request 2 : i had some lut to help focusing, like inversed BW to see better the focus peaking when you shoot in a full sun with original bmd display, or for my ursa i develop some lut with + 2 stop to see better on low light, but work with right exposure on shooting, but later i would like to share footage with correct lut and not with my "alien" lut.

request 3 : i talk about ability to recompress braw keeping raw ability changing a compression, without apply color correction or others changment.
i ever try to record at best, but sometimes later i find is more than i need.
i'm used with cineform raw to recompress keeping raw structure, or withCDNG using https://www.slimraw.com/ to recompress cdng to optimize space and quality

I think that easier to do with Braw be cause it is partially debayerd and just change the compression of separated component should be easier than classic raw.

braw feature request / camera option: segmented recording.

Thanks, Carlo. I misunderstood points one and two; sorry about that. As for Q0 versus Q3: I usually recommend shooting the best value as long as the storage created is manageable. I think you might be fine simply shooting in Q3 for those situations where you know you’ll be consuming a lot of storage. If you did continue with Q0, in post you could Archive the footage to another format entirely and delete the Q0 footage (given my doubts that BMD will offer a post process to convert Q0 to another quantization).

Any update to Carlo's request 1 to be able to segment files? As he points out, that's a huge space saver when filming wildlife where 20 minutes of filming can net mere seconds of quality footage. Segmenting a 20 minute clip into, say, twenty 1 minute segments is very advantageous.

if you need to "clean up" shooting, you can use Resolve, it can cut braw without recompressing.
you need only to open Resolve, load all your shooting, setup in and out for every clip, put all in a timeline, and by Media Managment copy trimmed version of your clips. Resolve keep original braw quality and allow you to have trimmed version to not waste space.
