BMCC clean feed frame rate

PostWed Feb 12, 2014 2:41 pm

Hi,

why forces the bmcc clean feed (overlay OFF) 50i and 59.98i? why is there no 25fps or 29.94fps clean feed (with overlays OFF)?

We need to produce in 25p!

Cheers & thanks

it is a clean feed, but with SDI overlays OFF it's 50i and not 25p (same with ntsc settings! 59.98i with 29.94p).

what we needed is a clean feed with no overlays and 25p! we're doing web production and don't want the 50i!

with BMCC set to 24p the clean feed is also 24p! we want the same with 25p! 25p set in BMCC and a 25p sdi-output. (if sdi-overlays are ON, the clean feed ist true 25p; if you turn off the overlays BMCC will force the SDI-output to 50i!)

thanks!

25 and 29.97 are TV standards. Those shooting for TV usually need interlaced. At least in north america.

If you're shooting for web, why do you care if it's 24 or 25? Just shoot 24.

Because our setup includes a ex3... many cams don't have an 24 option...

The question ist still: Why? It makes no sense for me that 24 is possible and 25 isn't...

Ah... I understand now what you mean. Sorry you original post was not clear.

BM change the 25p and 29.97p settings to switch to 50i and 59.94i so that the cameras will work with their switches. It was a request from the broadcast uses. I guess the thinking was that anyone using a switch would be running interlaced so no need for clean 25p or 29.97p options.

Best would be to contact BM support directly and put in a request. That way it gets logged. If there are enough requests it gets added to the to do list.

alternatively, you could roll back your firmware to before the change....Then you would have clean 25p.

Aren't they PSF frames though ? 25p delivered through 50i ?

And for those that say just shoot 30....

In a 50hz country then you get flickering lights and signs (discharge lighting)

So that's everywhere in te world except the US and Japan.

That's right. The cameras "50i" output is in fact 25p, but delivered as interlaced fields, in order to be compatible with devices that take 50i only but no 25p or even 50p frames. After deinterlacing - if proper done - you can restore the 25p frames from the fields.

You can shoot flicker free 30 in a 50hz country if you drop the shutter speed to 1/50...whatever that is in degrees. :D

Most cameras don't offer that option because it doesn't "clock" with a 60hz derivative.

Plus it means a different motion cadence which some don't mind but I hate it.

It pisses us 50hz countries off no end. It's always 60hz countries that don't seem to get what an issue it is.

Especially when 30fps is the only frame rate (hello Olympus)

You could also kick it up to 1/100 and still have that 50hz flicker free derivative.

With everything looking like you've just been shooting the beach landing scene from saving private Ryan ? No thanks !

It gets even worse when you later have to watch the 30 fps footage on 24 or 25 hz tv sets...

We have (almost) overcome the iron curtain, dividing our world into east and west. We have (almost) overcome the apartheit, dividing mankind into black and white. When will we overcome that final frontier, dividing power grids into 50 and 60 hz?!

24fps already does it. It's just video cameras could do it till circa 2001...
