Put the BMPC guts into a BMCC MFT body

PostThu Feb 13, 2014 5:33 pm

There is a discussion going on right now on BMCUSER where we are discussing putting the BMPC guts into a BMCC MFT body. If the bodies are identical except the mount this should be possible. If you had a BMPC and a BMCC MFT you should be able to swap the insides leaving you with a BMPC MFT (for more lens compatibility) and a BMCC EF (dumb mount). Obviously MFT lenses won't cover the BMPC's Super35 chip, but adapted lenses like PL and Nikon should. The current consensus is the active area of the BMPC's sensor should clear the MFT mount. I encourage anyone interested in this please join the discussion here or on BMCUSER.

I don't think that can work because of the actual physical size of the 4K sensor. The m4/3 image size would not cover the S35 size of the sensor. You would have a circular image inside of a 4K frame size. Physical size and frame size as a pixel count are two different things. The 4K sensor would have to have a higher pixel density to get all of the photo sites, that make up the 4k frame size, into the physical area that the m4/3 image covers. Physically the GH4 4K sensor is smaller than the BMPC 4K sensor so that it can fit 4K resolution into the m4/3 frame. It's kind of like saying let's put the guts of a 35mm camera into the body of a 16mm. The film gate of the 16mm would not cover the size of the film.

The point is not to use m43 lenses, but rather to have a very short flange distance so many other lenses would be adaptable.
