Blackmagic Cam App Orientation

Hello,
I recently installed the iPhone app on my iPhone 14 Pro and it works great. Although the app allows me to rotate the phone in Landscape mode and the footage is recorded correctly, the app gui does not rotate and the gui controls remain in the original orientation and is upside down. It’s very difficult to use the controls.
I did see another post about this where like the other user, I’m using a Beastcage and had to flip the orientation to offset and balance the device. It would be great if the gui rotates to the appropriate orientation to make using the settings easier.

Have you tried v1.1 released today?

Hi Peter,
I have tried the latest release. The image in the viewfinder appears correctly but the actually GuI interface is upside down and does not rotate. The user controls appear upside down on the left side of the screen.

On my iPhone 14 Pro, with the Settings / Orientation Lock set Off, rotating my phone to a landscape mode has the control right-side up and the screen really mimics the traditional BMD camera monitor displays.
Perhaps there’s some combination of Settings that causes the controls to be upside-down.

When I see everything properly, in landscape, I have the single iPhone On/Off switch topmost. When I rotate the iPhone so the Audio Control buttons are topmost, the video monitor displays the scene correctly but all controls and information are upside down. I do not have the screen orientation locked in Settings.
So an easy workaround is ensuring the landscape orientation has the iPhone Audio Control buttons on the bottom and the On/Off button on top.

Hi Rick,
Thanks for your feedback. You are correct but I should clarify further. When the iPhone is vertical the lenses are at the top portion of the phone. When you rotate the phone counter clockwise, the lenses are on the left side and the app orientation looks correct. With the third party cage and lens accessory that I’m using the phone can be balance better on my gimbal. The app does display the image I’m capturing correctly but the app control orientation does not change so it remains on the left and is also upside down. It would be great if the app controls changed to reflect correctly allowing for easier setting changes.

Wondering what the status of this review is? Again, the bug is when using BM Cam app in landscape with volume buttons on top (iPhone is turned counter-clockwise), the video is viewed as normal but the GUI overlay is upside down. When in landscape turned clockwise (I would call this "cage mode") all is normal. The use case is when using phone/app without a cage, having a shutter button (the up-volume button) on top makes sense. The native Apple camera app works properly in both landscape orientations. Hoping there will be a fix soon.

I can't reproduce that here on an iPhone 15 Pro Max.
You may try to delete the app and load again, but don't forget to copy your clips first.

My understanding is that it HAS been fixed on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but not on the Pro.

The volume button on top landscape orientation is only supported with the iPhone 14 Pro Max and 15 Pro Max phones currently.

Is there a timeframe for when the iPhone 15 Pro will be supported?

I found a sollution!
Either record in 14:9!
Or just put a beautiful dynamic island and cropped edges in the final product.
Or just a buy a new iPhone!
And I choosed just to buy a new iPhone!

Hi pravdomil,
how did you solve? I can't find 14/9 format...

you will still record 16:9
you just turn on guides for 14:9
and set guides opacity 100%
that's all

Hello, I have the same problem on iPhone 15 Pro latest iOS and app.
The gimbal balances better the other way, image is correct but GUI is upside down.
Only one side (left/right) horizontal flip will show correctly.

Hi, I just downloaded the Blackmagic Camera app on my iPhone 15 Pro Max and am having issues with the GUI not rotating to a horizontal (landscape) view to utilize my full screen. I have to shoot with the phone vertical and there is a ton of unused space at the bottom of the screen.
I have tried toggling through all the settings and really everything I can think of, but to no avail. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app.
Can anyone help?

Hmm. Settings -> Camera -> Enable vertical video?
Works for me, but maybe I misunderstand your intention. For further issues, please use this:

Sjosephadt - I had the same issue on my iPhone 16 . The iPhone rotates great with other apps, but locked in portrait on the Blackmagic app. I played with the BM settings and got it to work again. Under CAMERA, I turned "Lock Current Orientation" to on, then back off. That worked. The "Enable Vertical Video" option is off by default - never turned it on. The issue wasn't a "portrait video." The video was landscape prior just squished into a portrait app. Now even the settings menu rotates as it should.
