Blackmagic 6k Full Frame HDMI not working

PostTue Jan 30, 2024 3:42 am

Hi all

Been using the new 6k full frame for about a month now. Today as i started a shoot, the HDMI stopped working. I tried multiple cables and multiple monitors. The monitors and cables both work with other cameras just fine which ruled out those variables. The hdmi on the camera is bad now

anyone else have trouble with this on the new model? and if so, should i go directly to blackmagic or try to return to BHphoto for the quickest refund / exchange?

thanks!

When I purchased the bmpcc 6k, I was having freezing issues with it, where turning the power off did nothing and I had to pull the battery to get it to turn off, amongst other issues.

I sent it into blackmagic and they did repair it under warranty but when I received the camera back, there was adhesive all along the inner edge of the lcd screen (on the inside) and never seemed to work as it should when new. I never made an issue of it because it worked and had a shoot I needed the camera for.

Fast forward a year (insert marriage and life) and I pull the bmpcc 6k out from not being used and the touch screen doesn't work. I send it in to blackmagic again and pay for it this time as it is no longer under warranty. I get the camera back and they did a good job this time, but it always feels like a camera that wasn't right from the beginning.

Please don't misunderstand me, I do like blackmagic and their products and will definitely purchase more of their products. But If I had the choice again, I would opt for a new camera. The waiting is a killer though...

Just my humble 2 cents. I hope it works out whatever route you choose.

Did you power a monitor and camera from two different sources?

There has been lots of posts about the HDMI being fried on the BMCC6K & 6KPro but this is the first time I have seen this on the FF. Perhaps its indicative of the build quality that some seem to be getting.

It would be interesting to know how you powered the device attached to the monitor as suggested ?

hi - yes from 2 different sources. camera was powered via the ac / dtap with a v mount battery plate. and the smallhd 702 monitor was powered by the v mount battery regulated with a smallhd dtap to lpe6.

is there an issue with this protocol ?

Well, and it's a big well, in that I power my 6KPro from the V-lock battery but have my monitor with a dummy batter connected to the V-lock plate (Smallrig) BUT I power on the camera and leave it for a few mins before swithing on the monitor. When finished I switch off the camera, then the monitor then the switch on the plate.

So far so good.....but this is not something written on a tablet for Moses and I'm sure others have their own way of doing things.

interesting - i thought that protocol was only really necessary for SDI. Ive had sdis burn out / fail on me multiple times from blackmagic Ursa mini cameras, never HDMI though. Ive been using the same set up with the pocket 4k and pocket 6k never had an HDMI issue from protocol of powering / off
