Controlling BMPC6K options (monitor, iPad or smartphone)

PostFri Feb 02, 2024 12:54 pm

Hello everyone,

I am looking into options on how to remotely control the BMPCC6K on my rig.

A lot of the time while I´m operating the camera, I don´t have easy access to the screen to change the settings, so it would be nice to use another screen/monitor, or smartphone as a control panel.

Just the main functions would be nice! (rec/stop, iris, iso, etc).

Monitor: I´m looking at the Portkeys BM5-III WR as an on camera monitor.
APP for smartphone: Control Blackmagic Camera for 6.99€ by SayEffect Tech Solutions. Although it doesn´t seem to have been updated in a while.
Blackmagic Camera Control: Only iPad.

Is there any other options that people use that I´m missing??

Thanks everyone!

I have the same situation

Monitoring is not a problem, the HDMI output of BMPCC6K is only FullHD, any cheap monitor can do that.

I bought it cheaply in China and it has zoom and focus assistance for my old SONY camcorder.

But actually it's unnecessary, the BMPCC6K's own display is excellent and bright.

For control I will use the ATEM Mixer because I'm not a fan of Apple and don't trust an external Android program.

Everything also only works with Bluetooth, the BMPCC6K has no WLAN :-(
So a distance of 10 is already critical.
With my SONY 90D I used WLAN and a router as a repeater, which was excellent :-)
But we are with BMPCC6K and no WLAN.

The only question is the HDMI cable length?
For me it is 25m and 30m for two cameras. According to many opinions, this control is impossible without expensive converters to SDI.

I have now seen a solution (Youtube video that shows it works) which I will test.
so I ordered the ATEM.

It is expensive, over 1000 bucks because it has to be the extreme version, to control gain, focus, iso and shutter.

if it really works I'll be very happy.

There is another variant without BREATH :-)

Connect with Bluetooth directly on the camera and then forward it to the LH5H’s WiFi
Unfortunately only FullHD

There are some other WiFi monitors if you want to trust them, but they are expensive because the principle is always:
First the route with Bluetooth from the BMPCC6K to the additional WLAN monitor and then from there via WLAN to a second WLAN monitor

What you save in the end is cable and laying it. The only risk is WiFi reliability.

What you also miss is ISO work, the ATEM saves your footage and takes it over for work with Davinci Resolve.
This is important for me when I work with 3 or 4 cameras

The Portkeys LH5H looks great for controlling the camera, but I don´t think it is available to buy any where.

But that´s exactly what I need: something to control the camera settings when I don´t have easy access to the Blackmagic screen.

It would have been nice if the Blackmagic video assist monitors would allow you to control the blackmagic cameras.
