After update to 8.6 RS 2 camera control is not working.

PostFri Mar 29, 2024 5:36 pm

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed this? RS 2 record button and focus wheel not working when tethered to BMPCC 4K. Everything worked fine before the update.

Try do downgrade and see if come back to work.
If work is a beta firmware bug, if continue to not work, there is another reason

Thanks Carlo. I downgraded to 8.5.1 and as you may have suspected, my RS 2 now has full functionality with the Pocket 4. So for now, I will leave the 4K with the 8.5.1 version and keep the two 6K's with the newer version since I use the RS2 almost exclusively with the 4K.

Excellent, I’m happy for you.
Sent a report to Dji, Blackmagic Design change protocols with newer firmware, they should collaborate to come back in compatibility

Thanks Carlo. And thanks for reporting the issue to DJI and BMD. I’m sure they will fix it as it comes out of beta.

I also just updated my Pocket Cinema 6K Pro with the Blackmagic Camera 8.6 Public Beta update. Now like you all the camera controls won't work with the DJI RS2 transmitted via the Raven eye to my iPad. I really like the new features, but I use the iPads to control my cameras and gimbals. I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing it. Hopefully they will find a fix soon.

I'm about to buy the RS2. I would also like to see this fixed when it comes out of Beta.

That said, one of the new features in the Beta is camera control options. I wonder if this will eventually fall on DJI to resolve.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

The 8.7 beta release doesnt fix the DJI RS-2 Pro Gimbal issue unfortunalty.
I dont understand why a next release wouldn't fix such a crucial issue.

No fixes were made in FW 8.7. They only added live cloud feature.

Is Blackmagic going to fix this? Or do I have to downgrade to 8.5.1 indefinitely? This is outrageous! :x

Downgrading to 8.5.1 the USB connection works again. I have done this cycle now 3 times and can confirm the beta firmwawre breaks the USB cable connection on DJI RS.

Cheers,

I'm having the same issue with the old Pocket 6K and the RS3 Pro. Updating the camera breaks the gimbal remote record function. Downgrading to the old software restores that function.

Hi,

I'm in touch with DJI to see why this is happening.

That was almost a month ago. Looks like they gave up and I don't see how this is DJI's problem. It was BM with the update that was not compatible. If I downgrade the firmware to 8.5.1 on the bmpcc4k the camera will connect but I lose all the cool new features from 8.6

DJI is looking into this. We're not sure why that's broken at the moment.

Hi Kristian,

I just tested DJI latest firmware dated 2024.07.17. The firmware version is v01.05.00.00.
The issue remains with the Beta 8.7 firmware. DJI focus nor record button works.

Can you share what DJI shared? I dont understand as they havent not released a firmware since 2023.05.16. The DJI was always working on all the blackmagic firmware updates till the beta 8.6 came out. Than it broke and rolling back the blackmagic 6K G2 to 8.5.1 fixes the problem. So obvious the fault is somewhere between 8.5.1. and 8.6 beta. Can you not do a diff check on the source code?

DJI didnt update anything between the 8.5.1 and 8.6 beta, so how can this be a problem of DJI?

Just wanted to chime in and say that just because it works with one BMD update and not with another, it doesn't mean the problem is necessarily on their end. Sometimes there can be a bug that goes unnoticed because it's down a code path that's not often used, then one day something intentionally or accidentally uses it and you have a problem. I'm not saying that the case here though. They may just be in contact with DJI so they can find the solution together.

Ok I have the same problem, Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K connected to a new DJI Ronin Rs4 Pro via the control port cable does not trigger recording.

Does anyone know if this is going to be solved in near future? and can this be overcome by using the Bluetooth connection between DJI Ronin and Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K?

Same here. Focus control and record button of DJI RSC 2 were working fine and immediately with my BMPCC 6K Pro when plugged via USB-C, and now not working at all since the camera update, even with version 8.7.

I am experiencing the same on the BMPCC 6K PRO with the DJI RS2. Also, I am unable to downgrade, the previous Blackmagic Camera Utilities (8.1, 8.2, ..) no longer recognise the camera when plugged in. When I reinstall the v9.1, the camera is recognised again.
Anyone experience this or find a solution?

It looks like BMD bailed on this one, it has been over 7 months since the original post here. They release an update and then say it's DJI's fault. I can't see it being a DJI issue. I am pretty sure it has something to do with the new webcam feature on the BMPCC4K that messes up the USB-C connection. They gotta remove that whole webcam feature and I bet the controls will work again...but who really knows???

I too am quite frustrated with this issue. Especially since, for the BMCC6K Full Frame, there exists no firmware version that works with the RS 2 camera control. I am really hoping Blackmagic solves this issue.

I own two BMD cameras and absolutely love them both, but the most recent state of firmware updates has left me disappointed. Firmware betas with different version numbers, followed by stable releases with higher version numbers while the seemingly older beta firmware versions are left untouched. IMO a very confusing and frustrating way of doing things.

I feel you on this as an owner of P4K and 6KFF and RS 3 pro (also other BM cameras and hardware), the lack of solid firmware updates or acknowledgements of currents beta issues is frustrating as hell.

I understand BM focus is on newer camera's/equipment but can we get some love for the existing line of products please. The firmware and features sets of each camera is becoming more fragmented over time with each iteration of firmware, can we please have some housing keeping done.

Same situation with the new DJI RS 4 Pro and BMPCC 6K Pro (Firmware Version 8.6, Build f09f445a)

Camera control not working anymore is very frustrating and really slows down film production for us.

oh finally now we have an official answer. we know that Pocket users with old firmware (8.1) if they want to continue not having problems with Ronin and RavenEye better stay with this firmware. If they update… there are problems. Let's hope that DJI solves its new firmware so we can finally use our pockets on DJI Gimbals. Thanks.

It's something that DJI will need to fix.

Sure, it looks like we've broken something since we update the camera, but the reality of it is that DJI is not doing the right thing in terms of iterating through the USB endpoints so if we try and hack our builds to "fix" this, we will end up breaking something else.

The problem, after more than a year, is clear. It doesn't seem to me that DJI will ever make a firmware update to its RS2, RSC2, RS3... since they are now out of production. Blackmagic has not solved the problem, so it seems clear to me that those like me who own a BMPCC4K will have to resign themselves to the latest firmware that works with everything and has never given problems... and that is version 8.1
The subsequent versions (8.6 and following) however have no problems only with the DJI Ronin. It seems to me that I see from the forum that they have a lot of problems (with external SSDs, even with Cfast...), so I wonder what they are doing at Blackmagic.
