Hi there to all the community members.
I am taking a leap of faith into professional color grading ( I have been editing for 3 years for fun ), and I wanted to ask, if possible, can anyone send me Raw Files to edit and add to my showreel? I never did any professional work as colorist and I really want to try to see if I can make something with this knowledge. I am not a good cinematographer so things are not going that well right now, but I color grade well and have the vision. So far I have bmpcc6kpro footage but would be open to anything you feel like sharing including more Bmpcc6k pro footage. The footage would have credits of course!
Please send me a private message and I will send you my personal email if possible.
Thank you very much.
David

This may come off harsh but I don't think anyone would be interested in sending a random person his property. There is tons of camera vendor sample footage out there in the world though if you feel like getting your hands dirty.
Secondly not many would be interested in the work of someone that isn't showing any work on real projects. A showreel with just a bunch of random non client related stuff isn't ideal. And using sample footage is as bad as putting the work of a tutorial you followed in a showreel, so I would only use those to train or develop looks.
The only thing I would recommend is to find projects you can take part in at a beginner level. Maybe you know some people, student projects, 48h projects anything that can get you working on something tangible where you personally can take credit for as colorist that will actually be published in some form.
Even personal projects can work provided they're actual finished products. Things like a montage of nice places you've visited on holiday shot in a nice way.
People (clients) don't care much about how you can make one frame look, they care about achieving a look that fits the purpose/product in question, which is a hard sell if the reel is a collection of 'random' shots.

Everything you said is true. I needed that perspective from someone. I think I need to be realistic. You are right about everything and thank you for taking the time to tell me how it is. I learned a lot by what you said

Sure thing. And keep in mind, typically most of the jobs working as freelancer come from word of mouth. If you have done a few projects with great success and nice people, they will talk about you to others and your network can naturally grow pretty quick. Good collaborative experiences are worth much more than a showreel

Good luck!

Thank you very much. I will now change the way I do things. I hope the showreel made with my footage is enough to at least create any interest. I am afraid my footage is not that pleasing but It is best to keep it real and do the best with what I have.
