Dead vs Stuck vs Hot Pixel

I’m not sure I know what the difference is or what exactly they look like...

We have 2 small white dots that appear in some of our shots from our last short, shot on the BMMCC, always in the same spot.

They weren’t in all the footage thankfully, but I’m wondering what they might be.

I’m not able to post any pics at the moment unfortunately, but I’m wondering what the difference is between hot / dead / stuck pixels and what we might have in our footage.

The weird thing is this is the 3rd project we’ve shot with this camera and the first time I’ve seen anything like this, which hopefully is a good sign haha

Also, I just / finally updated our firmware to 4.7.1, so maybe hopefully that might solve it as well

Sometimes pixels are pure white (hot), sometimes they’re black (dead), and sometimes they hold on a specific colour (stuck). There are different things that can cause these issues but the most likely culprit is usually that one or more photosites on the sensor are malfunctioning or damaged. Most cameras have a function that will work around this in a way that is completely invisible to the user, but older BMD cams don’t have that ability.

There is a dead pixel filter built in to DaVinci though and it works super well. Would recommend giving that a shot.

Okay based on that it sounds like we have hot pixels

I’ll check out that fix in DaVinci, thank you!
