4.6k G2: shoot 4.6k or windowed?

PostMon Jun 10, 2024 7:50 pm

Trying to get started as efficiently as possible with the G2. Nearly everything i do is finalized still at 1920x1080, but there are some UHD things.

And so the next question is:

1) Shoot at full sensor 4.6K and drop the Q factor to keep file sizes reasonable,

OR:

2) Shoot windowed, and deal with changes in FOV while shooting.

From reading through the past discussions, much of the comments seemed to suggest #1 above.

I always shoot full sensor. Unless I have reason to shoot windowed. Like I needed to make a 125mm lens into a 250mm lens and get 300 FPS for a horse show jumping event. Otherwise, it's always full sensor.

However, I do shoot Windowed 4.6K for the Techniscope 2.4:1 ratio.

Me too, the advantage of downscaling give you more 1080p quality.
Cropping is only for special slow motion shooting, or you risk to see worst sensor performance, especially if you not have enough light.
This is not the Blackmagic Design only way, but generally with every cam, when you crop you trash many resolutions info and that mean less quality.

And generally, no Bayer-pattern sensor can resolve in pixels what the number of photocells suggests.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.
