Last update for the original Pocket 6K

PostSat Jul 20, 2024 5:41 pm

I own two original (G1) Pocket 6K cinema cameras.

From what I can see, Blackmagic Camera 8.1 was the last update that added any new features to those models.

Is there any point in installing newer Blackmagic Camera firmware versions?

Thanks :-)

You can't install newer firmware if there are no changes for your camera.

That being said, 8.6 adds a bunch of feature to the whole Pocket series and the 6K FF:

Adds support for using camera as a webcam or UVC device.
Adds media pool file browser.
Adds clip deletion support.
Adds Blackmagic Cloud clip uploads.
Adds direct uploads to DaVinci Resolve projects.
Adds ability to update and manage camera via ethernet.
Adds REST control API for remote control.
Adds login and secure certificate support.
Adds network time protocol support.
Adds web media manager support.
Adds file transfer protocol support.
Adds SMB file sharing support.
Adds mobile phone tethering support for some models.
Improves gyro metadata reliability.
Improves USB-C drive detection reliability.

Safest to wait until 8.6 is general release, not in beta.

Ah, that's why I missed it. I didn't look at any Beta versions. Four months seems like a while to still be a Beta. Maybe there are issues?

Be advised that this feature will add a bunch of new files to your media which are not necessary for post production and actually just clutter things up. :(

Additionally, the files aren't actually 'deleted', they're just altered to the point of being unplayable. So you don't actually gain any space on the media with such 'deletion'.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Every beta was so long, it’s an open beta and should be long enough to test all features before the release.

Anyway the good thing of Blackmagic Design cameras is that you can install firmware and downgrade it simply installing previous camera tools on your computer.

If it's not actually deleting things then you're experiencing a bug. It actually deletes files for me.

Also the deletion feature isn't the reason for all the new files on the card, I believe those are thumbnails for the media pool.

Oh, so it logically ‘deletes’ the clips from any playback view, but not physically deletes in the sense the directory can reuse the space until after a media format.

Edit
Mark points out his deletes are physical so looks like the beta may require further work. 8.6 is a significant update and worth the wait.

Yup. I wasn't aware that some people were having issues with stuff not deleting. I used the deletion feature last month when I was filming deer and low on space. I managed to free up like 50GB.

Which is kind of needed for the Delete feature to work. ;)

In any event, the extra files are really annoying. Just extra clutter we have to clean up in post. :(

I might be stopped at 7.9.1 for this reason.

In my post workflow, I select the media files that I download to my RAID which excludes clips that I know I won’t be using. If all looks good in Resolve, I also copy to my backup. Then I could format the media. At no point would I be referencing those additional files and the format logically removes all files when rebuilding the file directory.

So I’m not sure how having those extra files in 8.6 affects my workflow. Is there something I’m missing?

You simply don’t delete clips.
8.6 add many interesting feature like ability to see multiple clips at same time in a thumbnail, ability to see clips recorded with different compressions.
Ability to use like webcam connecting directly to computer.
Ability to connect camera to internet in different way (and different useful addition with it, from sincro hour to Blackmagic Design cloud).
There are a lots of feature to be happy of 8.6 for original pocket 6k.
