Micro Studio Camera 4k G2 not showing menu

PostTue Jul 23, 2024 9:37 am

Hello

I bought a couple of Micro Studio Camera 4k G2 for my production setup. I tested one camera yersterday and everything worked fine. Today i wanted to try a few more functions. Same Setup.

What i did yesterday: played with the function LUT, changed from 60Hz to 50Hz and to 25fps according to my region. Nothing deep in the system.

The camera is starting up and the image looks fine. But the buttons don't work. Nor the Menu button nor the Set button do something. Only Up and Down do change apperature. Powerbutton does also work. Turning on and off does not help.

Currently i am downloading to camera setup on windows, but even if that helps i would like to know what could cause this so i could avoid it next time.

Many thanks!

The camera only shows the menu on screen display via hdmi. Just in case you are now monitoring through SDI.

Sorry I was not clear I have been contemplating buying this camera to make ir a cinecameras. I know that it doesn't have a screen. What do you connect via hdmi to be able to visually modify the settings.

Thank you

Personally - I connect whatever I have to hand , sometimes its a Blackmagic Video Assist , sometimes a Lilliput screen , sometimes into an Atem Mini which I view via the usb webcam output.

I use the camera as a studio camera - hence I don’t usually adjust the settings.

I'm having a related issue where, viewing over HDMI, I can see the HUD but cannot access the main menu or adjust any settings besides aperture. I can use the electronic zoom/focus functions on the lens, adjust aperture, start/stop recording and power on/off but I'm locked out of everything else. Is there some button combination that locks/unlocks the HUD I accidentally pressed?

Hello

OG here, i didn't get the notifications of answers...

So what i figured out is really strange. The settings menu works with some screens, with some not. For example
Videoassist 7" 6G works
ASUS PA148CTV works
Philips BDM4037UW doesn't work (tested on HDMI 1.4, couldn't reach the 2.0 plug)

So maybe, blackmagic could give us some hints of what screen it needs.

I saw I a similar comment on an online shop in my country (digitec.ch) saying:
"To my surprise none of the computer monitors I own (3) show the HDMI output. An inexpensive beamer and a Philips TV do show just fine. Apparently also HMDI has its quirks. The camera claims 1920x1080 output - the computer monitor just says "out of range" (Asus 1920x1080 monitor)." But in his case there was no image, in my case only the settings menu didn't show up

Yeah, now i know, but it should be clear on what kind of screen it works

This gave me an idea so after a factory reset didn't do the trick, I inspected my HDMI cable, which is a slightly fragile flat one, and it had incurred a tiny bit of damage on one side. After replacing it with a new one, all functionality was restored. Apparently this was just enough damage to disable the ability to interact with the menu/HUD but didn't affect the picture at all!

Maybe bmd or someone could make an app so it could be seen on a phone or tablet.
Wish someone would try with the 5 inch video assist.

im having the exact same issue. BMD support told me to enter the camera into recovery mode and then system reset / update the camera. to no avail, they want me to send it in to RMA the camera but I need it for work.

I have four of these cameras in my fleet and I'm also having the exact issue on multiple units. First one exhibited the behavior directly out of the box. I troubleshooted it with support to no avail and ultimately was sent a new unit. In the meantime, I still had to purchase a replacement camera because the RMA process didn't line up with the timeline a paid gig. Almost as soon as that camera arrived, another one started doing the same thing. I've tried all of the normal troubleshooting steps, multiple HDMI monitors, various cables, factory reset through camera control, all without a satisfactory result.

My cameras mostly stay in studio and are run via ATEM, but I occasionally take them on the road for various client shoots where I need physical access to the menus and settings. Fairly frustrated by this issue after investing exclusively into Blackmagic infrastructure for my business.

Wondering if this is some sort of firmware issue that needs to be addressed? The most recent camera of mine to encounter the problem only sat in the studio, so there's no chance that it was physically damaged in some way by rough handling. Has anybody else had luck resolving the issue? Seems like for one user it was a cable, but sadly the fix doesn't seem to be that easy in my case.

Ran into this today, the menu would pop up but disappear instantly. We fixed it by switching to a different monitor.

Had exactly the same issues two days ago - everything worked fine until the HDMI signal dropped for a second - then all menu disappeared and no buttons worked to bring it back again, "up/down" buttons changes the aperture. I switched cables etc. , restarted camera - nothing worked.

However, next day Menu and HUD were back again with the same setup (cables etc.)

Yesterday I had some HDMI signal drop outs (flickering), but Menu and HUD remains intact.

I don't think this can be a problem with the Monitor/Display - how could that affect the display of the Menu/HUD ?

I used a "Feelworld Touch 7" over HDMI

The Camera is brandnew - first usage

It might be worth checking if the camera firmware needs an update, sometimes odd issues like this get resolved with a refresh. Also, try doing a factory reset through the camera setup software if you can connect to it. If that doesn’t help, it could be a hardware issue, and reaching out to support might be the best move.

Well, I had the newest update/firmware.
However, now I did a factory reset and I have to investigate if it happens again.
Bad thing, it happens randomly. Hopefully this is just a firmware-thing and no hardware problem.

Problem again today!
Camera was connected to monitor - everything worked fine, until I connected a USB-C cable - image dropped for a second and Menu was gone - no more button function.

Made a factory reset - restarted the camera - but still not able to use the buttons - except up/down buttons, which changes the aperture.

Is the camera faulty or the firmware?!?
I am very disappointed - it is not possible to work with this camera.

Hi,

This sounds more like a firmware issue than hardware. It's something we need to investigate. Thanks.

well, I tried a lot - got a suggestion from Blackmagic Support yesterday:

The steps below may help with resolving the behaviour with your Micro Studio Camera 4K G2.

The following instructions will activate the firmware recovery mode on your device:

- Please install the latest version of Camera Setup and open the application on your computer.
- Please ensure your device is powered off.
- Next you will need to connect the device via USB to the computer.
- Once the device is connected via USB, please power the unit on whilst holding the record button.
- The device will enter recovery mode and you will be able to update the firmware of the unit.
- If you are not prompted to update the unit, please click the circular settings button within the software and then click update.
- Please wait for the update to finish. Once completed the unit should be operational again.
- If this does not work the first time please try again.

Didn't work.
Tried to reset/reinstall different "Camera Setup" / Firmware versions from 7.9.x up to 9.2

The fact that this camera doesn't have Bluetooth is really a bummer. There is no other way to access the settings than via these buttons and HDMI.

As far as I can see, the REST API also doesn't offer any way to access the camera settings.
Without the possibility to access the settings - the camera is lost.

Sending the camera back. . .waiting 2-3 months for a repair, is not really an option - the seller don't offer a replacement. Would have been better to buy the camera from Amazon.

. . . suddenly it starts working again today - no idea why.
Maybe this is a "temperature-thing", camera was up and running for about an hour - short image dropout, Tally and power led were flickering for a second - MENU and HUD display back again.

. . . and today gone again for some minutes.

This is a mess.

Perhaps it would be advisable to clarify whether there is some correlation between the cameras' device numbers/serial numbers and the problem. Maybe this is a manufacturing defect in the respective production chain.

Hello everyone.

I bought a blackmagic micro studio 4K g2 camera. I have two monitors, a blackmagic one that displays the image and the settings menu. The second monitor, a portkey LH5H, displays the image but does not display the settings menu. Why?

With the old BMMCC camera, the one with the same body, everything worked perfectly.

Meanwhile I got my camera back from the service - the main board of my camera was faulty and replaced.
So, I don't think this problem don't have anything to do with Monitors and/or settings.
