PYXIS Monitor!!!

Exactly what I was asking for with the Video Assist changes. This does everything right for on camera monitor for both PYXIS and URSA Cine. Now, all we need is an additional option for wireless...

Yet, this is a great accessory, and very affordable. It's within reason to buy the PYXIS and this monitor together and not have the purse strings hurting.

Thank you Blackmagic Design! This is amazing! Can't wait to see more iterations of this monitor design and concept. Maybe a 7" and wireless models.

I don't think it was the box camera lovers who were having an issue with the fixed screen tbf.

This definitely made the PYXIS more appealing to me. However, I’m still gonna rock the cameras I have and wait a generation in hopes of internal ND and a sensor with faster readout and frame rates. After all my Pocket 6K Pro has internal ND (which is working again), and can at least do 48 fps without cropping the sensor. But the UMPG2 is the GOAT for me still.

Really hoping that a cross between URSA Mini and URSA Cine for a more compact UCine LT model, which can utilize this new PYXIS Monitor as well. The UCine LT could even have the UMP 4” flip out screen for all I care if we can get this nice 5” monitor as an add on.

Can the fixed screen be turned off completely?
It becomes mostly obsolete when using this screen and would only eat battery.

I had the same question. we know that it can be 'locked', but when you access the menu of one monitor, does it also show up on the other? it would be nice to at least turn the brightness down on the on-camera monitor and not effect the mounted one.

Kind of wish they had designed the PYXIS built-in side monitor like the one on the UCine with a sun hood cover that could collapse over to protect it and presumably turn it off when no in use. That may be a good idea for the next generation of PYXIS.

I don't know if its just me? This looks cool and all, but it just looks like the 5 inch screen from the 6K FF repackaged in a cool looking case that works via usb-c (can it be used with anything else?)

I already own the video assist 7inch 12G, I would be more excited to see some kind of camera control function added to that, even if it was some kind of wireless module (Something along the lines of functionality the Tilta nano 2 give me - specifically talking about its ability to control the camera).

Or maybe release a official BM camera app that supports all phones systems and not just iOS? Like, why is this a thing in 2024? - lol

All the time and work that's gone it to making the camera phone app. It's great, but I did not buy the P4K and 6K FF (and a bunch of lenses) just to record and make videos/films from my phone - lol Kind of defeats the purpose of why I got invested into the Blackmagic eco system in the first place. Awesome, bang for buck cameras (editing sofware) that punch way above anything else in their price range.

This was 100% needed and the idea of having a monitor controlled and powered over USB-C feels like the future, but now you have to wonder why is there a 4" screen on the side of the camera?

Presumably the next version of the Pyxis will have 1) a better sensor 2) built-in NDs 3) an option for this new monitor in 7" size. That camera would make a lot of sense.

it sounds like an Ursa Mini Pro 12k OLPF would be ideal for you, haha.
I understand the desire for different features, but as far as I am aware, the body/sensor size doesn't accommodate Internal ND filters. a 7" version might be too much of a power draw though USB, but I'm not sure what specs are going to decide if that's doable.

nice. this is admission of a misstep and a proper correction. I think it should come with the camera at a total of $3500 and be given at a discount to those with paid pre-orders.

Thats a great screen for producers, clients, dp's directors or any one that needs to have a look and are decision makers. The monitor can go on top. Besides not everyone will want the monitor they will be content with the evf. Just like the wide majority that can afford one.

PYXIS Monitor!!!

PostPosted: Thu Sep 12, 2024 5:45 pm
by rick.lang
Well well, I think Grant has a sense of humor as he announces, for IBC2024, three kit versions of an external bright monitor with full camera control with shade that closes down (which I suspect turns off the monitor when closed like the other cameras do when the door is closed). This is good thing as delivered.

It isn’t a functional replacement for the Video Assists as there’s no recording capability, no on-board batteries, no gorgeous large detailed waveform displays. But a 5” monitor with many mounting and integration options possible including the ability for sole operators to see themselves as they record their influencer videos. Or for an assistant to use on the right side. Redundancy is a good thing.

If you feel the URSA Cine EVF isn’t needed on the Pyxis (or URSA Cine camera) or is perhaps a little pricey, we now have a functionally great budget alternative.

Thank you, BMD.

Edit
I think the suggestion of bundling any of the three configurations with the Pyxis or URSA Cine camera purchases, with a modest discount, is a very good one.

There is always a catch with Blackmagic. I bet the screen eats battery fast :D

Clearly a design flaw at the beginning because the side monitor is not really needed if they released this monitor when they launch the camera. Now you have two monitors....Duh

I don't think it was a design flaw at all. BMD had a new evf and the V.A. available. I think it was an Idea that many did not understand maybe because they didnt think of the av monitors or did not want to spend a good amount of money on a good evf. Seeing other bmd cameras with a side monitor they felt That it was missing. Looking at other box cmeras none have a a full monitor only for settings so they all needed to buy a monitor or an evf.

I Think that an evf is far superior to a monitor even better than high nit ones. But having this new monitor does not detract from the side one. The user will have his monitor while pertinent crew have another high end monitor to use. So it really expands the function and use of the pyxsis.

You could include yourself as one of those many who did not understand because clearly the existing VA does nothing to control the camera unlike the side monitor. Now you have two monitors that does exactly the same thing...

One thing I find weird that no one is mentioning, at the time of the Pyxis announcement I thought people were annoyed at the placement of the side screen mainly because it would be tricky to pull focus off a 4inch screen plus its placement on the side on the side.

Is having touch controls on the new monitor that important? Would/Is it such a huge hassle to use the inbuilt monitor/buttons to change the camera settings?

I understand that if this monitor was for/compatible with the Mirco G2 it would make way more people happy and have better functionality and make life easier for those that use it.

What's the big deal with just using an ordinary monitor with the pyxis and making you own mounting solutions? Like its looks cool and every, but I just do get it?

Surely, some one well eventually make an app that can use the USB-C out that connects to the phone usb-c (similar to a usb-c webcam) and give you a feed out plus touch control (similar to BM own camera app)?

Sooo…the dumb question is will this monitor also work w the Micro Studio 4K G2?

If so, it solves MANY of the issues that camera has, namely configuration with the side buttons.

With the side monitor you can do all the camera settings and with the new monitor for use by the operator. The dp can check the color, the director can check the framing and acting. This has made the pyxsis more flexible for small low budget, small crew set ups. If its solo then and evf will suffice and for some projects the monitor.

Sadly I think support will only be for the PYXIS and UCine models and any other future cameras coming out. The old cameras won’t be able to use this monitor.

But this does give a positive impression on the future. Blackmagic is building the foundations of the next several years of products. Just like the URSA and Pocket before built the framework for future models the PYXIS and UCine will build the frame for the future.

To be honest? Not so ridiculous for an experience operator. I did some times when I can’t see directly but I know exactly framing and depth of shooting. When you work with animal in documentary sometimes do this kind of blind shot.

One can use a hub with USB and ethernet to simultaneously control the cam via ethernet also record and transfer files from attached USB storage. It’s doubtful that the M4KG2 has enough juice on the USBC out to power a 1500 nit monitor tho even if it could output video (RTSP, YUV, RGB, etc.,) over said connection.

Good Luck
