Iphone 15pro max mp4 files in Davinci Resolve Studio 19

PostSun Sep 22, 2024 8:11 pm

Dear readers,

when I make videos with my Iphone 15pro max, mostly in 4K 30fps and transfer the files to my Windows laptop I7, 4k screen, RTX3070 with Davinci Resolve Studio 19 and render a video, all beautiful light (like a dia/positive) are gone in the result. Why is that and what can I do to prevent this?

When I create a video on my Iphone with Filmora, all beautiful lights are still there. Example:

Thanks for helping!

Your footage is HDR. Your Resolve project isn't set up to use HDR. You can change that but it can be an advanced topic with many pitfalls. I suggest you seek out a tutorial for iPhone HDR footage in Resolve. Those may not be 100% correct but it should get you going.

Hello Roger,

thanks for you reply. My laptop has also HDR, so why isn't Davinci Resolve Studio 19 using it?

Do I have to use a lut for that?

The default settings for DaVinci Resolve projects are not HDR but you can enable it. Try this:
  • Go to Project Settings and switch to the Color Management tab
  • Set Color science to DaVinci YRGB Color Managed
  • Automatic Color Management should be checked
  • Set Color processing mode to HDR
  • Set Output color space to HDR HLG

Now if you render the file it should contain the necessary metadata to trigger HDR when viewing it.

Roger,

thank you. I read that HDR can be processed by several methods, but nothing works.

When I create a video on my Iphone 15 by Filmora, the exported file is automaticely exported as HDR.

I don't understand that that is working so easy, while Davinci Resolve has so many difficulties.

When rendering, you may have to explicitly set the output bit depth to 10-bit. Try these settings for example:

Format: MP4
Codec: H.265

Encoding Profile: Main10

Return to Cinematography
